Obituary for Jesse Eugene Trotter

Jesse Eugene Trotter
Jesse Eugene Trotter, affectionally known as “Gene,” peacefully met his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Jan. 5 at the age of 88.

Gene was born in Antlers, Oklahoma, on Aug. 5, 1928. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning home from the war, he got a job driving cabs, where he met the love of his life, Wilma Everett. The two met when Gene took Wilma home from her work in his cab. That night, they went on their first date. Weeks later, they married. Gene and Wilma would have four sons, Larry, Buddy, Billy and Jesse. This March, they would’ve celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

In the 1950s, Gene and Wilma moved their family to Oklahoma City, where they opened a garage door company together.

Gene loved his family, OU football and horses. In his 60s, he went to school to get his associate’s degree in equine studies, so that he could train horses. Gene’s most prized horse was Thewaytogo, which he bought for just a few hundred dollars. The Thewaytogo would go on to win several races, including the No More Hard Times stakes race at Remington Park. For years, Gene trained horses at his ranch in Jones, Oklahoma, with his son Larry, before retiring in his 70s.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Hattie, brothers Freddie, Robert and James, sons Larry and Billy and grandson Tim. He is survived by his wife Wilma, sons Buddy (Brenda) Trotter and Jesse (Tina) Trotter, daughters-in-law Patsy Davis, Melinda (Freddie) Lasota and Terri Davis, grandchildren Shawnda (Mark) Parkhill, Matt Trotter, Tiffany (Jon) Butler, Brent (Jamie) Trotter, Nikki Trotter Brewer, Jake (Rachel) Trotter, Jessica (Brent) Reynolds, Nathan (Caroline) Trotter and Brittany (Bob) Przybylo along with several great grandchildren.

Services for Gene will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 11 at Britton Christian Church at 922 NW 91st St. in Oklahoma City.
