Obituary for Lawrence "Fred" Smith

Fred is an American hero!

Born in Bowling Green, OH and growing up in Cleveland, OH Fred served as a flight engineer and gunner on a B17 doing bombing runs over Germany and ending in Russia in WWII. After the war he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to work on his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering at Spartan School of Aeronautics. He served our country again in the same capacity in Korea. He met the love of his life while serving at Tinker AFB, working on his Master degree from OU, and serving students at the OU as an associate professor. They married January 21, 1954. Fred became an instant father as Opal had a four year old son. What a great husband and stepfather he was!

Fred worked for the US Government as an engineer in OKC, Seattle, WA, and San Antonio, TX until 1985 when he retired and then went to work for Boeing in OKC. After almost 10 years he retired from Boeing and began lending his expertise at Creative Container, his stepson and daughter in law’s company. He served his country in war and peace time, he served his family always!``````````````````

Fred is survived by his wife, Opal of over 64 years, his sister & brother in law, Tom and Lynn Green, Columbus, OH, his stepson and daughter in law, Mike and Debbie Murphy of OKC, his step grandson Michael Todd Murphy of Moore, step grandson Nicholas Harroz, his wife Susan and his son Ford of OKC, and many loving nieces and nephews.

We all love you and miss you! You are truly a Great American to all of us and we are so happy you are with your Savior now!
