Lloyd B. Mitchell, 99, passed from this life into an eternal one on May 15, 2018. Born August 26, 1918, in Spencer, Tennessee. Lloyd grew up in Southwestern Oklahoma where he graduated from Arnett High School. Before enlisting in the US Army, Lloyd finished a two-year degree program at Cameron Junior College and had begun his baccalaureate degree program at the University of Oklahoma. After his military career, he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Oklahoma State University (Oklahoma A & M).

During World War II, Lloyd served as a Captain in the US Army Air Corps, navigating a B-17 for twenty-five missions in the early days of the European Theater. For his acts of bravery, distinguished leadership, and exemplary conduct, Lloyd was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross with three Oak Leaf Clusters. In July, 2016, the French Government awarded Lloyd its highest honor to a non-citizen, the French Legion Medal of Honor.

Lloyd married his college sweetheart, Mable Grace Apple, on May 2, 1942. They had five children and were married for fifty years. After Mable’s death in March, 1993, Lloyd married Nancy Kay Keith Hufschmid whom he met at church. They were married for almost twenty-five years.

Most of Lloyd’s professional career was spent with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was a Real Estate Appraiser and became a Regional Office Manager in Oklahoma and New Mexico. After retiring from his service with the BIA, he engaged in private real estate appraising and was active in many roles within his local church. He served as an elder for thirty-three years in four congregations of the churches of Christ. He also taught Bible classes, worked with youth programs, delivered meals to the elderly, and taught English as a second language using Bible reading classes. Friends remember him as being an avid dominoes player.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lina Mitchell; three brothers, John, Charles, and Don Mitchell; his first wife, Mable, and a daughter, Sarah Ellen Maple. He leaves behind his wife, Nancy Kay Mitchell; three sons, Brooks, David, and Mark Mitchell; a daughter, Martha Johnson; step-children, Ramona Wolf, Kimley Moler, Don Hufschmid, and Rebecca Thomason; 16 grandchildren and 9 step-grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Southwest Church of Christ or Oklahoma Christian University.
