Obituary for Joy Lee Railey (Manahan)

Joy Lee (Manahan) Railey passed from this life on January 12, 2019. She was born in Okemah, Oklahoma on August 20, 1928. She lived with her mother, Kathleen Manahan, while attending Okemah High School. During her junior year, she was granted an age waiver by her school and began working as a bookkeeper at Southwestern Bell Telephone to help with expenses. She would arrive at school at 8 a.m., study until noon, then leave and walk to work. She would work until 10 p.m. and then walk home. Upon graduating from high school, she and her mother moved to Midwest City where her sister (Joann) helped her find work at Tinker Air Force Base where Joy worked for many years. It was here she met Robert H. "Bob" Railey, who would become her lifelong friend, partner, soul mate and husband. Joy and Bob were married in 1961. Joy's keen professional ability and profound attention to detail facilitated her promotion to the position of Assistant to the Superintendent of Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City. Joy enjoyed her home immensely and loved to entertain, especially during the holidays. She also loved playing bingo and reading. She and Bob were both avid pilots and often flew in one of many Cessnas they owned through the years, the last one being a 150 Aerobat. She and Bob designed and built their home in Oklahoma City in 1962, where they shared many happy memories. Joy enjoyed her neighbors, but most of all her kitchen where she spent many hours cooking and baking. Most of the families Christmas' were spent in Joy's beautiful home where she and Bob would - after opening presents - entertain the family with slide shows consisting hundreds of family photos. Joy was the fifth of seven children and is survived by her brother Rameth "Sonny" Manahan, Jr. and his wife Joyce of Afton, one sister Joann Clonts of Midwest City, sister-in-law Malacha Payton and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, Robert Hall Railey; her parents, Rameth Manahan, Sr. & Kathleen (Cartmell) Manahan; her sisters, Ramona Curry, Virginia Goode, Molly Hampton and Aileen Mackey. Memorial services for Joy are set for Wednesday January 16th at Vondel Smith and Son Mortuary located at 13125 N. MacArthur Blvd. Visitation will be held between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., at which time the funeral service will begin.
