Obituary for John Lyle Garlow

Services to honor his life will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Capitol Hill Baptist Church (304 SW 134th OKC, OK).

Dr. John Lyle Garlow, retired Associate Executive Director of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, was a faithful servant of our Lord. At the age of ten, Lyle trusted The Lord as his personal Savior. Before entering O.B.U., Lyle served in the U.S. Navy Air Force as an Aviation Electronics Technician. While a student at Oklahoma Baptist University, Lyle began his ministry as a pastor. He continued his pastoral ministry in four Oklahoma churches. Then, for 14 years, Lyle served in the Religious Education Department of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, six years as the Department director. He became President of the Southern Baptist State Sunday School Directors. He was the program director for Falls Creek youth weeks. He loved Falls Creek and realized its Christian witness around the world. For 21 years, Lyle served as the BGCO’s Associate Executive Director. Lyle served as President of the Southern Baptist Stewardship Commission; led Bible teaching crusades in Japan and in East Pakistan where he helped start Sunday school work. He led and coordinated Stewardship Development Projects in Hong Kong and Spain. He helped lead a three continent Mission in Europe, Africa and South America coordinated the Oklahoma Convention’s Mission Partnership with Spain; and served on several national and international Baptist Task Forces. Lyle has preached in almost every Southern Baptist Church in Oklahoma…in other states, and around the world. He led hundreds of seminars, conferences, and meetings. He wrote the books, Oklahoma Baptists Working Together and The Work of Baptist Church Associations. Lyle strongly believed in the Cooperative Program! He produced a film, “A New Commitment To An Ancient Commission.” Lyle graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded OBU’s Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award. The Seminary’s School of Religious Education presented him the Distinguished Service Award. In 1992, OBU honored Lyle with a Doctor of Divinity degree. Lyle was a proud son, brother to five siblings, husband to wife, Willa Ruth, father of Dawnellen and Sam, and a granddad and great-granddad. He has been a long-time member of Capitol Hill Baptist Church.
