Obituary for Billie Carol (Hill) Johnson

A gathering to share memories with family will be announced. Please contact Devin at 405-633-2468 for details.

Billie Carol (Hill) Johnson passed from this life on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 due to complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, diabetes, and heart failure. She leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Jerry Johnson, two daughters, Sherry Gibson and Pamela Stark, four grandchildren, Mandy Stringer and husband Chris, Melanie Gibson, Devin Stark and Connor Gibson and wife Brianna, and one great-grandchild, Camden Stringer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy Hill and Esther Haley, and her younger sister, Linda Wattie.

Billie was born at home on a snowy night near McAlester, Oklahoma, two days before Christmas in 1947. She and Jerry met in high school and began their life together soon after. After graduating from US Grant High School in 1966 she attended secretarial and business school. She worked for an insurance company and a bank before joining the family beauty distributing business, Sooner Beauty Supply, until her retirement.

Family was most important to her and she was very close with her mother, her sister, her daughters, her grandchildren and her nieces and nephews. Billie was an amazing cook and baker, a voracious reader, and loved jigsaw puzzles and word games (where her competitive streak was displayed). She also enjoyed doing crafts with her sister and daughters. Although she lived her entire life in Oklahoma, she loved visiting the Rocky Mountains.

Although small of stature, she ran the household and family and there was never a doubt who was in charge. After her diagnosis with pulmonary fibrosis, she was given an estimate of one to two years remaining. She remained for 13 more years, fighting that illness to the end. While we are glad that she no longer has to struggle for breath, her passing has left a gap in our lives that will never be filled. As she wished, her remains were donated to the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in the hope that better treatments for these illnesses may be found.

In lieu of flowers or other gifts, please consider a donation to the O.U. Health Science Center to further this important research
