Obituary for Brenda Kay Mullins (Thornton)

Brenda Kay Mullins, most beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and dear friend left this earth and entered fully into the presence of Jesus on Wednesday May 17th, 2023.

She is preceded in death and was met at the gates of Heaven by many loved ones, specifically her mother, Joyce Thornton and her son in law, Michael Marshall.

She leaves behind her husband Charles D Mullins, her children: Jennifer Kay Marshall, Heather Renee Stacy, Stephen Robert Brewer and Jason Robert Brewer as well as her son in law, John Gay Stacy; her adored grandchildren Jacob Stacy, Luke Marshall, Daniel Stacy, Kamryn Brewer, Brady Dean Brewer, Caleb Brewer, and her great-grandchildren Rhiannon “Annie” Colvin and Dean Colvin; her Father, Floyd H. Thornton, her brother Floyd Thornton and sister-in-law Joyce Thornton, as well as nieces and nephews Heidi Gillespie and spouse, Christopher Thornton and spouse, Timothy Thornton, Matthew Thornton and spouse and Aletia Cherokee Thornton and 14 great-nieces and nephews. Aside from the large and loving family, she leaves behind an immeasurable amount of close friends and “like-family” relationships and people whom she loved and carried in her heart, surely more than could be counted or printed within the confines of this publication.

Brenda was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 21, 1955 to parents Floyd Haskell Thornton and Roberta Joyce Thornton. An Oklahoma girl from the start, she spent her life shining and sharing her bright personality, her tender heart, infectious smile, and seeking grand adventures in any direction she could find them. On October 25th, 1980, she married Charles Dean Mullins in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where they have lived and raised their children and grandchildren.

Brenda was usually known to all those who knew and loved her as one of the most fun people in the room. She was incredibly talented in a variety of fields and was a social butterfly. One of her greatest talents was her ability to meet and make friends in the variety of environments she found herself in, many of whom became like family to her. Her warm, outgoing personality and love of laughter made her a shining light in any room and people were drawn to her. She was always a giver; incredibly generous with her time and resources to those around her, and she would do anything she could to move mountains for those she loved. She had an immense talent for creative arts and an eye for design, and for years owned The Mulberry Tree, which marketed custom floral creations and design services, and even worked for a time as a wallpaper hanger. Some of the things that we will all remember about her were her ability to turn any situation into a celebration, her love of shopping and eye for a good deal, how she always knew a great place to “grab a bite to eat”, her insistence of instructing young people the proper art of TP’ing a house, and how much she enjoyed a good movie.

She had a passion for God and deeply cherished her close relationship with Jesus Christ and demonstrated much of this through her love of worship and her commitment to service. She was an ordained minister and had a calling to serve and refresh women in ministry. She was the founder of First Fruits OKC and First Ladies, ministries specifically born for the purpose of helping women in full time ministry find rest and refreshment in their calling. She was a broker and a realtor in the OKC and surrounding areas, and a member of OKCMAR.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday May 20th, 2023, at 1:00PM at Vondel L Smith Funeral Home at 6934 S. Western Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73139 where memorial contributions may also be received.

“Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
