Charuben Bharatbhai Shah, daughter of Pradyumna Bhatt and Kusum Bhatt, entered the world in Gujarat, India on September 23rd, 1953. Her childhood was spent in a house full of laughter and warmth. Both parents were highly educated and imparted the benefit of knowledge to all their children. Charu attended university in Vadodara, India, and post-graduation, began a career in teaching. She was beloved by her students as an enthusiastic and passionate educator. In her personal life, she was part of a close knit group of friends that included her sister, and eventually, my father. She married Bharat Shah on May 14th, 1977 and had two children to whom she was a warm and comforting presence during her entire life. In 1990, Charu immigrated to the United States and began a new life. Through the family’s early struggles in adjusting to a new life in a strange land, she was a constant source of strength. She worked hard at any job she was given, and raised both her sons to become strong, independent men. She faced many health challenges throughout her life with grace and composure. Despite her unwavering stamina and determination, she eventually succumbed to cancer, the emperor of all maladies, after a six year struggle. Throughout all her treatments and surgeries, she was a model of perseverance and fortitude. She was beloved by so many for her kindness and ability to comfort those around her. She had in abundance the one skill so many lack; the ability to listen with patience. She is survived by her husband and two sons who will forever hold her example of a well-lived life in their hearts.
