IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Avis Norvell
Cosby
April 29, 1929 – January 21, 2025
Avis Norvell Bailey Cosby, 95, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025. The daughter of Floyd & Bonnie Bailey, she was born on April 29, 1929, near Stratford, Oklahoma. She was the ninth of twelve children and attended Vanoss High School.
She married Jimmie Mack Cosby on September 25, 1956, and they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. Together they welcomed three children: Kathy, Mark, and Mona. Avis enjoyed a fulfilling career with the Oklahoma State Department of Labor. She enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, and sharing music with others.
Throughout her life, Avis found great joy in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren by celebrating life's many milestones. She actively attended Southern Oaks Freewill Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and later joined Crosspointe Church in Norman, Oklahoma. She was known for her quick wit, kind spirit, and ability to uplift those around her. In her later years, Avis moved to Kansas City to be closer to her family, where she formed new friendships and became an unofficial grandmother to many. Her zest for life remained evident, as she supported melanoma awareness through the Kelly Way Foundation and maintained an active presence on social media, sharing her unique perspective with humor and grace.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Cosby, daughter Ramona Cosby, granddaughter Kelly Cosby, and several siblings. She leaves behind her daughter Kathy (David) Scherler; son, Mark (Jimmie Marie) Cosby, as well as her cherished grandchildren David Kent Scherler III, Kale Scherler, Rachel (Adam) Martin, Krista (Joel) Kobe, Clay (Micah) Cosby, and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sister, Violet Bailey Tabor. Avis will be remembered not only for her resilience & strength but for the love & joy she brought into the lives of everyone she met. Her spirit will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
