Obituary

Barbara Jo McCollum (91) of Katy, TX went into the presence of her Savior Jesus Christ Thursday morning, November 25 at Sunrise of Cinco Ranch. Barbara was born in Seminole, OK on February 14, 1930.

During elementary school Barbara contracted polio. After her recovery, she started dancing to build strength and stay flexible. She grew to love ballet, visited Hollywood to study with the greats such as Alexandra Danilova, and continued a lifelong career in performance and teaching.

In 1947, she graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City, OK. Following that she attended Oklahoma City University where she met her husband Ross Gene McCollum in the library her freshman year. From across the library it was love at first sight. They married a year later. Accompanying her husband to the University of Oklahoma, Barbara started her teaching career at the Norman School of Ballet, where she performed and taught with her mentor Robert Bell.

In addition to dance, Barbara loved sewing, gardening, travel, and the performing arts. She loved being a mother and said numerous times that she'd do it all over again! Her faith in God gave her stability and comfort throughout her life. She was involved in her churches—Nichols Hills (now Quail Springs) Baptist Church (Oklahoma City OK) and Second Baptist Church (Katy TX)--teaching Sunday school and missions and studying the Bible inductively with Precepts.

Predeceased by her parents, Bonnie Lee Hiller and Robert Fred Hiller and husband Ross Gene McCollum, Barbara is survived by her children Ross McCollum Jr and Sarah Scott, Dennis and Kathy McCollum, Pamela McCollum and M'liss Brownfield, and Kelley and Marwan Basatneh as well as her grandchildren Sean and Sophia McCollum and Shannon and Bryce Kunkel. She is also survived by sisters Rosemary Daniel, Kathy Stevens, and Linda Whitaker and former husband Joe Walker.
