Our beloved mother, Betty Ann Lindenschmit Blasdel, passed away peacefully at home in Oklahoma City surrounded by family and a background of beautiful classical music on February 1, 2024.

Betty was the only child of Ann and Carl Lindenschmit, born May 25, 1932 in Kirkwood, Missouri. She spent many summers surrounded by mountains at their summer home in Estes Park, Colorado. She loved the area so much that she pursued her college education at the less-University of Colorado in Boulder. While there, she enjoyed mountain climbing, particularly on Pike's Peak. At CU, she earned her BS degree in Business. CU is where she met her future husband at a Women's Club sponsored square dance. Eventually, while working as a secretary for a law firm, a mysterious box arrived in the mail. When she opened it, she found a sparkling engagement ring from James G. Blasdel, who had graduated two years earlier. This unromantic gesture marked the beginning of their 57 year loving relationship.

After their wedding in December of 1956, they moved temporarily (they thought) to Oklahoma City where Jim was running a motel. This was a challenging exercise in character development for both Jim and Betty. Managing the motel property became a long-term endeavor and they remained in OKC for the rest of their lives. Over the next seven years, three daughters arrived.

She was a 50+ year member of St. Luke's Methodist Church and the Triquetra Sunday School class. She served on the Administrative Board and worked as a Finance Assistant in the church Finance Office from 1991 to 1993. She played the flute in the church orchestra and played soprano recorder in the St. Luke's Recorder Ensemble. She took photos for Witness to a Loving God (book of church's history) and for the St. Luke's Archives in the 1980s. She served as an usher and did volunteer office work. Later, she managed the church Archives room, a small museum showcasing church history and artifacts.

She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the USA, first as a young girl, then later as a leader for 12 years in Red Lands Council. Her creativity, camping and sailing skills were particularly beneficial to her troop. The highlight of her Scouting career was helping chaperone a group of Girl Scouts on a six week European tour.

Betty was a member of Chapter EK of PEO. She served as chapter president, treasurer and corresponding secretary. She was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and neighborhood Garden Club. She valued the friendships she made, the social opportunities and particularly, their philanthropic and civic activities.

Having been inspired by her parents' many trips to visit various Navajo Indian reservations, Betty obtained a BFA (Fine Art-Metal Design) at the University of Oklahoma. She became a skilled metalsmith and made many amazing metal objects, knives, and jewelry. She had an artist's eye for quality craftsmanship and pursued the highest standards for her creations.

She was an artist with many diverse interests, each of which she undertook with similar passion. Some of those interests included stained glass art, wood carving, photography, scrapbooking, tole painting, and needlework. As each of her nine grandchildren were born, she began a needlepoint Christmas stocking which was ready for the baby about a year later. Along with many other volunteers, she spent two years making a needlepoint kneeler cushion for the altar at St. Luke's Methodist Church.

As a self-appointed genealogist and custodian of family history, Betty spent countless hours compiling documents and organizing correspondence from the last century on both sides of the family. She assembled thousands of photos into meticulously organized and annotated albums and created an extensively researched family tree that extended back to 1635 when the Blasdel ancestors arrived in the United States.

Betty maintained an enormous third generation stamp collection, started by her grandfather in the late 1800s and continued by her father. She was an avid sailor, even competing in various races with her beloved boat, "The Blue Whispurr." She and Jim were intrepid world travelers and visited many corners of the world on six continents throughout their marriage.

As a child of the Depression, Betty was practical, capable and responsible. She modeled the highest levels of gentility and character throughout her life. She was a person of quiet spirituality and devotion to her church. She had a loving, generous, dependable and completely unflappable personality. She demonstrated perseverance, compassion, self control and patience on a regular basis. Momma was our rock and the center of our family. We love her and will treasure her memory.

She is survived by her three daughters, Cheryl, Kathy (Steve Cohoon), and Ann (Randy Larkin); nine grandchildren, Hannah, Caleb, Joshua, Timothy, Tabitha, Ian and Alyssa, Alex, and Lila; five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Malachi, William, Olivia, and Laurel. Betty will be sadly missed by her beloved companion dog, Shadow.

We would like to offer grateful acknowledgement to the team of caregivers from Hearts at Home who provided such wonderful, loving and compassionate care during Betty's final years. We also want to thank Pat who has shown enormous loyalty and devotion in caring for both of our parents.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Methodist Church (stlukesokc.org), Girl Scouts - Western Oklahoma (gswestok.org), PEO International (donations.peointernational.org) or Kiwanis International (kiwanis.org).
