Thanks for the Memories
It seemed she was everyone's second mother, and although Betty Murray excelled at many roles in her 92 years, Mother was the most defining and most important to her.
Betty had three sons, and all their friends. In an era before soccer moms, she was confidant, cheerleader, cook, medic, tutor and friend to scores of kids from Seminole, OK to Odessa, TX and beyond. As her boys matured, and began to build their own lives, she reveled in being Mom to daughters in law, sweet things and friends of her kids around the world. With her marriage to I.G. Murray in 1975, their union brought another dimension and a bigger, blended family. In the end Betty had 6 children, 11 grandchildren and scores of others who always knew her as Mom.
As a member of the greatest generation, she worked for McDonald Douglas, building bombers during the Great War. She was a cosmetologist (she even knew the great Merle Norman.) She was a multi-complex property manager, an abstracter, and manager of the University of Oklahoma's Financial Aid Department, under George Cross.
But her time baking pies, decorating her home, devoting time to the junior league, and managing the lives of those she loved, were her truest self.
Betty Dixon Gibson Murray was born November 2, 1923 in McAlester, OK to Eugene and Eunice Dixon. She moved to Seminole, OK at age 3, to a wild booming oil field town, with mud streets, which later settled into a quiet, little, pleasant town where she attended school grades 1-12.
Betty had a big family, and loved each one of them. In her words, she had no real claim to fame, except she loved her life, family and friends. She thought she had a happy, special life, blessed by God, and her belief always showed in her positive attitude.
And her parting words left to those left behind were "You can finish the rest…"
