Obituary

Bruce Allen McAfee passed away on Wednesday after a valiant battle with cancer. He was known for his steadfast loyalty and preparedness, and was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it be for family, friends or the homeless.

Bruce was born in Checotah, OK and graduated from Checotah High School. He later earned a Bachelor of Science, as well as a Master's degree in education, both from Northeastern State University.

Bruce enjoyed a lifelong career in education. He taught algebra and coached several sports before moving into more administrative fields and leadership positions, including Transportation Director, Athletic Director and Assistant Superintendent at Muskogee Public Schools. Through the years, Bruce spent much of his well-earned downtime on the lakes of Oklahoma, driving boats, riding jet skis, and teaching his girls to ski. He also loved Thunder basketball, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, spent innumerable hours tinkering in the garage, gardening and even discovered a newfound love of golf upon retirement. During retirement, he also enjoyed staying in touch with his high school classmates and attended many alumni events.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Betty; devoted children Britta Thrift of Oklahoma City, Bethany McAfee (Adam Tollison) of Checotah and Blaire O'Brien (Kevin) of St. Charles, MO; three adoring grandchildren, Foster Thrift of Oklahoma City, and Hannah and Caitlyn O'Brien of St. Charles. He is also survived by his sister, Sheryl Garner of Muskogee, OK; nephews Brian Garner of Muskogee, OK and Mark Hardcastle of Republic, MO; mother-in-law Sue Hardcastle of Wilburton, OK and brother-in-law, Robert Hardcastle of New Mexico.
