Obituary

C.B. Speegle, Jr. went quietly to be with his Lord on Dec. 23, 2008. C.B. was born in Roosevelt, Okla. on July 14, 1916 to Mabel and C.B Speegle, Sr. He was living at Spanish Cove Retirement Village in Yukon at the time of his death. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Billie Speegle; his second wife, June; sister, Pauline Lauderdale, brothers Cliff Speegle and Wayne Speegle, and his oldest son, C.B. III. C.B. was a legendary high school football coach at Capitol Hill High School for almost 40 years. He graduated from Capitol Hill in 1933 and later graduated from Central State where he was the team captain in football, also earning all-conference honors in both football and basketball. After coaching stops at Konawa and Cushing, he joined the Capitol Hill staff in 1942. After his service in the Coast Guard during World War II he returned to Capitol Hill in 1945 as a math teacher, football, basketball and golf coach. C.B.'s teams won numerous conference and state titles. He was the first coach of the Oklahoma all-staters to win the Oil Bowl against the Texas all-staters. He also coached the professional Okla. City Plainsmen. C.B. retired from Capitol Hill in 1978. He is in the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, and a "UCO Distinguished Former Student." He has been inducted into more halls of fame than can be remembered and the football stadium at Capitol Hill bears his name, C.B. Speegle Stadium. In 1955, his all-white Capitol Hill team played the all-black Douglas Trojans in Oklahoma's first integrated football game. He was coach, teacher, mentor and a role model to hundreds of young men and women throughout South Oklahoma City. Once asked about his success he said, "I was just fortunate to be at the right spot at the right time." On his favorite word, "cull": "We called those who weren't regulars 'culls.' We used to call them 'hardtails.' That's just a name for kids you used to scrimmage against." He is survived by son Mike Speegle and wife, Sharon; Steve Speegle and wife, Shirley; and daughter Jan Scott and husband, Bill. Grandchildren include: Curtis, Gina, Kris, Leah, David, Shane, Stacey, Ben and Yale. Great grandchildren include: Lindsay, Cody, Colton, Lauren, Alex, Christopher, Brook, Paige, and Josh, and great-great grandchild, Tanner. The family would especially like to thank the wonderful staff at Spanish Cove for their loving care for the man they called "coach."
Viewing will be from 4 to 8 PM Thursday, December 25, 2008 at the funeral home. Services will be at 10am Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at Southern Hills Baptist Church at 8601 S. Penn. Burial will follow at Resthaven. Services are directed by Vondel L. Smith and Son, North.
