Obituary

Calvin Dayton Floyd – Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Papa, Brother, Uncle and Friend of Oklahoma City passed away peacefully Friday morning February 14th, 2025 at the age of 98. He believed in living a life full of joy and laughter, squeezing every ounce out of the day as a gift from God.

He was born in Tishomingo, Oklahoma on June 7th 1926; grew up in Ada, Oklahoma where he met the one and only love of his life Floyce Irene Newman in 1939, and eventually moved to Oklahoma City in 1943.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years Floyce and youngest daughter Dana Sinclair.

Calvin is survived by 3 daughters Sandy (Tom) Billingsley, Judy (Bill) Kemper, Cheryl (Thom) Meade, and son-in-law Mark (Holly) Sinclair; He was an entertaining and devoted Grandfather to Chad, Lyndee (Mark), Jodi (Andi), April, Dustin (Tanida), Justin, Bianca, Erica, Melissa (Zach); and full of energy to great-grandchildren John, Adam, Ethan, Emilia, Dean and Allison.

Growing up he used his money from his paper route to build engines for gas-powered airplanes, the largest one having a wingspan of 6 feet. This hobby led to a career in the Navy and Air Force Reserves. Calvin enlisted in the Navy when he was 18 and served 2 years in World War II. Then he was assigned to Aircraft Carrier Service Unit (ACSU) who needed airplane mechanics stationed in San Diego. During his time there, he once took a 3-day military pass the week of Memorial Day and hitchhiked from California to Oklahoma to surprise Floyce – it took 2 days to get to Oklahoma, 2 days spent with her, and 2 days back! He later served 9 months in Guam. Six days after he was honorably discharged, he and Floyce married on 06/25/1946. In 1947 he got accepted to the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa. He received his Aircraft and Engineer license, parachute and packing license, private pilot license, and his groundwork for flight Engineers Multi license. He would take Floyce flying in a small plane with no radio contact with the control tower at the time. They were on their own! He worked for the FAA as an Avionics Inspector until 1979 and retired at the age of 53. During this time, he also joined the US Air Force Reserves and served 3 years.

He was very active raising 4 independent girls, set on sending each of them to college; volunteering at his church and the local hospital; and being involved with gardening and travel throughout his life. He would take his daughters around to sell Camp Fire candy to earn attendance at summer camp; he supported all 4 of them in American Legion Post 35 Kiltie band; he took them all tent camping at church associations, and then later for 2 weeks every year to National Parks. He loved to help his wife in the garden, canning tomatoes, corn, jam, and green beans; and picking fruit from their pecan, peach, and apricot trees.

Calvin became at Deacon at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist church in 1977 and spent over 50 years recording all the sermons on cassette tapes. He also volunteered at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center, along with Floyce, for over 30 years logging over 20,000 hours. Both brought faith and fulfillment to his life. Happiness comes from what we do, and fulfillment comes from why we do it.

Calvin loved to travel! Some of his favorite places to go were Cone, TX for Harmony Plains Singing School, Carlsbad Caverns, and White Sands NM. He and Floyce traveled all over the US, Canada, and Mexico in their RV; and they took many cruises to Panama, Europe, Alaska, the Pacific, and on their 50th wedding anniversary took a cruise to Hawaii marking the last state of traveling to all 50 states in the US, and on their 60th wedding anniversary went with 21 family members on a cruise to the Caribbean.

Lessons learned from Grandpa (from the grandkids): learning how to put a roof on an old cabin; how to work puzzles better; the love of gardening; basic engineering; perseverance in working through a problem to find a solution; how to be a rascal; absolute love of reading; the tendency to put all of the houseplants in the best spot in the house altogether; how to fix a toilet; how to hook a swing to a tree so that you don't fly into it; how to wiggle our ears; and how to make a bra out of a napkin (that one may have come from a great-grandkid 😉).

He loved gardenias, the color blue, Independence Day, playing dominoes, John Wayne movies, popcorn, Red Skelton, building and flying airplanes, Abbott and Costello, saying Grace before every meal… but most of all, he loved his beautiful and wonderful wife Floyce Floyd. She was the light of his life, and he got to be with her this Valentines Day! He called her his "Dear" years before they were ever married; and he had faith early on that this gal he met, who had a hole in her heart and wasn't supposed to live past her 20s, was going to be his grand adventure. They had 73 long incredible years together. And now he's gone home to her to be together forever more.

Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center ICU who provided invaluable care and kindness to Calvin during his last day. And many thanks to Village on the Park who has taken exceptional care of both of them over the last 12 years.
