Dorvan Richard Shields passed away on Friday March 13, 2026, in Oklahoma City. His family was near his side as he drew his last breath.
Dorvan was born in Bentonville, Arkansas on April 21, 1949, to Doris and Richard Shields. When he was a young boy, his family relocated to Wichita, KS. He grew up in Wichita, along with his sister Doris and brother Terry. Dorvan played football throughout his school years and always enjoyed spending time outdoors. He was young, full of life and lived it to the fullest. In 1967, he graduated from Wichita South High and later attended Wichita State University.
Dorvan served as a firefighter with the Wichita Fire Department, where he thrived in the fast-paced environment and took great pride in using his skills to help others. In 1977, he met the love of his life, Cheryl Warner, at a sailboat regatta at Cheney Lake. The two quickly fell in love and were married on March 4, 1978. Together, they were blessed with two children, Lacey and Tyler. Dorvan loved his family fiercely and was, without question, a devoted husband and father. He was a true family man and a natural leader through and through.
Dorvan changed careers in the early 1980s when he began working in the oil and gas industry. He and Cheryl relocated to Oklahoma City after he accepted his new position and ultimately made OKC their permanent home. During this time, Dorvan also became a Mason. He was a 32nd degree master Mason at the Myrtle Lodge 145 in OKC. Dorvan also was a member of India Shrine Club for the past 41 years. In 1984, Dorvan made his final career transition, beginning work in Aircraft Quality Assurance at Gulfstream Aerospace. He later continued his career with Boeing, where he remained until his retirement in 2016.
After retiring, Dorvan was able to devote more time to his many hobbies—though his favorite by far was spending time with his family. He had a passion for restoring things and took great pride in bringing old equipment and vehicles back to life. Over the years, he restored a Farmall tractor, a Jeepster Commando, several boats, an ’87 Ram Charger, and many other projects. He loved to tinker and could fix or improve just about anything. Dorvan was also skilled in woodworking and built or repaired countless items for his family, including a toy chest, tables, chairs, a TV cabinet, classroom items for his daughter, and much more. Each project was truly a labor of love.
He also enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and taking RV trips with Cheryl. Dorvan loved being outdoors and staying active, especially when it meant making memories with the people he loved most.
Dorvan will always be remembered for his creativity and resourcefulness, devotion and service to his church, and love of family holidays and traditions. He always took pride in the success and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He will be missed by his family and friends, but his legacy will live on through each life he touched on his earthly journey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Doris Shields and father-in-law, Bill Warner.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughter, Lacey Berry & husband Ben; son, Tyler Shields and wife Hillary; sister, Doris Brookman and husband Larry; brother, Terry Shields and wife Cindy; Grandchildren, Piper Berry, Nora Berry & Jack Shields; and many extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers Dorvan's family has requested memorial donations to Shriners Children's Hospital or St. Andrew's Community Church Missions Fund
