Edgar Eugene Childs, 98, better known as Ed or Papa by his family and friends, was reunited with his wife in heaven on Wednesday, March 17, 2021. Ed was born April 22, 1922 in Roberta, Oklahoma to Walter Childs and Abbie (Roberts) Simmons. He enlisted in the U.S Army on April 16, 1942 and was honorably discharged on June 20, 1952. His military history included World War II veteran, Expert Infantry (94TH Infantry Division, 376TH Regiment, I Company), and landing on Utah Beach in Normandy on September 8, 1944. He liked telling the story of his Company Commander holding up an M1 rifle and saying "Men, take care of this at all times, it's your ticket home". Ed also fought in Patton's Third Army in the Battle of the Bulge and saw action in the Rhinelands, the Ardeinne Forest, St. Lo, and Metz. He always felt the reason he made it home alive was because his mama stood out on her porch praying for his safe return. After serving his country he married his sweetheart, Mary on May 28, 1955 and together started a beautiful family. Ed enjoyed many things in life including fishing, going out to eat, being the King of Blitz, and traveling. Some of his favorite places were Germany as well as Georgia to visit his daughter. He was able to capture many memories with his disposable camera. Ed also enjoyed time at the lake but most importantly time with his beloved family.
