Obituary

The family and friends of Frank Layman celebrate his life and his reunion to God and his lost loved ones. Devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather, Frank served his family, friends, church and employers faithfully throughout his life. He was born November 7, 1932 in Rockport, Kentucky. Died in Del City, Oklahoma on Memorial Day May 25, 2015 at the age of 82. His Mother was – Ines Mae Layman – a hardworking mom who was born on Jun 14, 1914 and died at age 35 on July 9, 1939. She is buried in Clarkson Cemetery, Grayson Co, Kentucky. His Father was- John Edmon Layman – a lathe operator in a metal shop in Oklahoma City. His dad was born on Sep 8, 1908 and died on Oct 28, 1978. He is buried next to Frank's mom in Clarkson Cemetery, Grayson Co, Kentucky Frank's mother died when he was six and a half years old. His father moved to Oklahoma City where Frank grew up. When Frank was in Junior High, his father was hospitalized for a while and unable to work. Frank helped his father pay the bills by working newspaper routes before school. Occasionally, on cold winter mornings, local firefighters would help Frank deliver his papers when the snow was too deep or the temperature was too cold. Frank attended Central High School in Oklahoma City where he met Betty Jo Hutchins. They were from different backgrounds. Betty was a nice girl and Frank was a rough and tough street fighter. They were much like Olivia Newton John and John Travolta in the movie Grease. At that time, John Wayne and Gayle Russell were in a popular film entitled, Angel and the Bad Man. The school paper announced Betty and Frank's relationship as "The angel and the bad man". Frank and Betty were married June 8, 1952 at Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Frank worked at the Jewel Tea Company as a warehouse manager until he entered the military in 1952. Frank served in the Army during the Korean War from Dec 5, 1952 to Dec 4, 1954 where he achieved the rank of Technical Sargent. He served in the Anti-aircraft Artillery Headquarters at Fort Lawton, Washington. After his active service, he served for eight years in the Army Reserve in Oklahoma City. He attended Oklahoma State University extension center in Oklahoma City taking practical courses in electronics. Frank worked at Trice Electronics, Miller Jackson Electronics between 1954 and 1964. He went to work for W.W. Grainger's in 1964 where he was an award winning salesman for 30 years. He and Betty were faithful active members at the Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City for 30 years. They transferred their membership to First Southern Baptist Church in Del City Oklahoma where Frank served in the benevolence ministry. Frank is survived by his children: Catherine Humphreys of Colleyville, TX, Rusty and Mary Layman of Springfield, MO, Carol Bybee of Oklahoma City, OK, Randy and Lauren Layman of Oklahoma City, OK, Christy and Don Haycraft of Oklahoma City, OK, Carin and Josh Prickett of Colleyville, TX, his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
