Obituary

Edwin Harry Sand Jr.

March 11, 1941 – August 1, 2025

Edwin Harry Sand Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, surrounded by his family after a long, courageous journey with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's dementia.

Born on March 11, 1941, in Ellendale, North Dakota, Ed was the son of Edwin and Bernice Sand. He grew up working on the family farm, where he developed a love for music and baseball—both of which he would go on to master and share generously throughout his life.

Ed attended the University of North Dakota, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree in Music Education with the highest honors. His passion for music led him into a distinguished 40-year career as a music educator, most notably serving as the band director for the Osseo School District in Minnesota. Through decades of teaching, he inspired thousands of students and left behind a rich legacy of musical excellence.

Beyond the classroom, Ed was a devoted and loving father and husband. He coached his sons' baseball teams, drove them across the region to ski races and golf tournaments, and poured his heart into family life. He was a constant, caring presence who led by example, always showing up with encouragement and love.

Since 2009, Ed enjoyed being a snowbird with his beloved wife Susan, spending winters in the warmth and sunshine of Arizona until her passing on January 1, 2010. In the 14 years since her death, he continued to stay socially active and spent time with friends, including a girlfriend, Georgie.

Ed was preceded in death by his father Edwin Sand, his mother Bernice Sand, and his wife Susan Sand.

He is survived by his sons:

Greg Sand, wife Carrie. their two children Luca and Kinsley. Along with Jack and Harrison Sand

Ryan Sand, wife Mariana, and their four children: Anabel, Sophia, Ryan, and Cody

Ed was blessed with eight grandchildren who brought him great joy. In his later years, he found fulfillment in organizing music groups and playing with friends, keeping his deep love of music alive.

His life was a gift to all who knew him. He was a kind, extraordinary man—devoted to family, faith, and music. His music and legacy will shine on for all eternity.
