Obituary

Elmer was born in Cache, OK on Nov. 21, 1931, he was the eighth of eleven children born to William Walter & Hattie Dove (Tyner) Humphreys. He passed away following a brief illness on Jan. 2, 2022. In the early 40's,Elmer's family moved to Oklahoma City. At the age of nine, Elmer began working as a caddy to help support the family. He was a gifted athlete and fell in love with the game of golf. Elmer was Valedictorian at Jackson Jr. High and he graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1949. A fierce competitor, Elmer was a Medalist & State High School Champion in the 1947 Summer State Junior Golf Championship. In '48 & '49 he was back-to-back Individual State High School Champion. After graduation, Elmer went on to play golf for Oklahoma State University and became the number one player on the golf team. His golf career was put on hold when he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in 1952. He was later transferred to the reserves where he faithfully served his country until his discharge in 1957.

In 1953 Elmer married Wanda Bray. Elmer and Wanda raised 4 children and enjoyed 53 years together until her death in 2006. Elmer worked as an Ironworker from 1953 to 1964. He was the first head pro for Trosper Golf Course. In 1964 Elmer joined Mathis Brothers Furniture, where he had a wonderful career for over 50 years. He could still be found daily visiting with customers at the store until his passing. On Oct. 18, 2008 Elmer married Peggy Dailey. Together, they enjoyed traveling, taking cruises and of course, playing golf. Elmer and Peggy were longtime members of Hidden Trails Golf & Country Club & faithful members of Southern Hills Baptist Church. Elmer was also a 32 degree Mason & a Shriner. In 2009, Elmer was inducted into the Capitol Hill Sports Hall of Fame.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Wanda and nine siblings.

Kathy Ward & her husband, Ron
& David Dailey & his wife, Mercy.

The family will be present to greet friends at the funeral home from 4-7 PM In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Salvation Army
