Floyce Irene (Newman) Floyd – Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Sister, Aunt, and friend of Oklahoma City passed away peacefully Thursday morning April 2nd, 2020 at the age of 94. She believed in living a full life and enjoying each day as a gift from God.
She was born at home in Purcell, Oklahoma on September the 16th 1925; moving to Ada in 1939 where she met the love of her life Calvin Floyd, and eventually moving to Oklahoma City in 1943.
She was preceded in death by her parents James Rowland and Lona Viola (West) Newman, and her youngest daughter Dana Sinclair.
Floyce is survived by her husband Calvin of 73 years, and two sisters Melba Taylor and Sue McCarthy. Wonderfully devoted to her 4 daughters: Sandy (Tom) Billingsley, Judy (Bill) Kemper, Cheryl (Thom) Meade, and Dana (Mark) Sinclair. She was a loving Grandmother to Chad, Lyndee (and Mark), Jodi (and Andi), April, Dustin (and Tanida), Justin (and Casey) Erica, Bianca and Melissa. She taught us generosity, how to listen, and to always save the sweetest part of the watermelon to eat last. She was a happy Great-Grandmother to John, Adam, Ethan, Emilia, and Dean and enjoyed their abundant energy; and lastly Silvana, their foreign exchange student that they had kept in touch with over the years.
Our mother was busy, raising independent girls, volunteering at the church and the hospital, and being involved as a Camp Fire leader and PTA President throughout her life.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church of OKC where she served as church clerk for over 50 years. She also volunteered at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center, along with Grandpa, for over 30 years logging over 20,000 hours. Newborns were still going home with homemade knitted caps up until 2 years ago.
Mom loved to travel! Some of her favorite places to go were Cone TX for Singing School, Carlsbad Caverns, and White Sands NM. Her and dad traveled all over the US, Canada, and Mexico in their RV; and they took many cruises to Panama, Europe, Alaska, the Pacific, and on their 50th wedding anniversary took at cruise to Hawaii marking the last state of travelling to all 50 states in the US, and on their 60th wedding anniversary went with 21 family members to the Caribbean. She instilled the joy of travel in all her grandkids who have been to many countries all across the globe.
Mom was an excellent seamstress, making lots of dresses and costumes over the years; and she fed her family by hard work canning from her garden – peaches, green beans, tomatoes and jam just to name a few! Her favorite meal of course was beans and cornbread which is served every Wednesday evening for family to gather at their house before Bible study. Her favorite pastime being with family playing dominos.
She loved decorating for holidays, with Christmas being her favorite when all the extended family would get together. She collected 12 nativity scenes, had 23 boxes of decorations, and as tradition she sang 'Up on the Rooftop' every year to all of us while we joined in on the chorus.
Her family was her pride and joy. She led by example and taught us all service, excellence, and leadership. She showed strength and determination for overcoming obstacles in her health over the decades. She said, 'You don't live to be 90 without being tough'.
She was known for her beautiful smile and a helping hand. We will miss her every day!
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Normal Regional who provided invaluable care and kindness to mom.
