Gene A. Hawkins PhD, 80, of Oklahoma City, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
A private family celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Cremation is under the direction of Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuaries and Crematoriums.
Gene was born to Lee Oliver Hawkins and Grace Avis Philbin on December 30, 1942 in Longbeach, California. Gene graduated High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He studied at Oklahoma Baptist University and Tulsa University and received his Doctor of Philosophy from University of Oklahoma in 1977. Gene had a passion for helping people and loved his work. He owned his private practice and served the Oklahoma City area as a Clinical Psychologist specializing in pain management. He retired in 2020.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Siloam Lodge in Oklahoma City.
Gene married his loving wife Lou Powell Leonard in 1996. Gene accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in his home pool with family and friends as his witness on October 22, 2022.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Hawkins and nephews,Tony Hawkins and Zeb Slocomb.
He is survived by his wife, Lou of the home; his sons, Todd Hawkins and husband Ian of Irving, TX, Shawn Hawkins and wife Bobbi of Norman, Oklahoma, Billy Jo Powell and wife Becky of Oklahoma City, David Powell and wife Kristy of Amarillo, TX.; his grandchildren, Josh Norton and wife Angeles, Teagan Hawkins and wife Indy, Trevor Hawkins, Bryce Hawkins, Tyler Powell and wife Morgan, and Ryan Powell; and two great grandchildren, Charles Gene Hawkins and Chandler Paige Powell; sister, Janet Slocomb and husband Bryan of Washington, OK, and many nieces, nephews and cousins that share in memory and love.
Gene's favorite prayer was the Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
The things that mattered most to Gene were God, family and friends.
He will be greatly missed.
