IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Grace Marie
Skrapka
November 27, 1929 – May 5, 2024
Grace Marie (née Drabek) Skrapka went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 5, 2024.
She was the fourth of ten children born to Louis and Elsie (née Kralik) Drabek, arriving November 27, 1929, in Oklahoma City—just weeks after the Wall Street Crash of '29 that kicked off the Great Depression. She grew up in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, attending Lee Elementary School, Capitol Hill Junior High, and Capitol Hill High School (graduating with the Class of 1948).
Grace worked downtown at Halliburton's department store on Hudson Avenue and Main Street, and at SWBT on NW 3rd Street and Broadway Avenue. In 1948, the Drabek family got some new neighbors across the street when the Skrapka family moved into town from Dale, Oklahoma. Grace wound up charming Raymond Skrapka while he was playing baseball nearby with some friends. He asked her out to a movie, and their romance blossomed from there. They were wed in Oklahoma City in June 1951 and raised two children, Janie and Raymond Paul, II.
After Raymond's retirement in 1978, he and Grace bought an acreage near land in Wheatland, Oklahoma, that Grace's grandparents had originally claimed in the Oklahoma Land Run. There they enjoyed raising a large garden and some cattle and giving their grandkids a taste of farm life. Grace also enjoyed frequent visits with her sister and next-door neighbor, Betty, who had married Raymond's brother, August. The sisters would do each other's hair, go "to town" together for errands, frequent the Foley's department store, and share different varieties of iris bulbs with each other. Grace also had the privilege of helping care for her ailing mother, who with Grace's brother Wesley moved next door in 1988.
Around 1990, Grace and Raymond began attending Shartel Church of God in Oklahoma City. They also purchased an RV and joined the Roadrunners' Camping Club with many friends from Shartel. In June of 2021, Grace and Raymond celebrated 70 years of marriage. Raymond passed away in January of 2022, leaving Grace without anybody to take care of. After a tumble that broke her left arm in October of 2022, Grace was ready to have other people take care of her. Since then she's had a dedicated crew of caretakers, including Kellie, Mary, Holly, Cynthia, Sara, Juany, Vickie, Silvia, and Jamie. Grace will be remembered for her hard work that enabled her to fall asleep almost every time she sat down to take a break, her nearly constant smile and cheery disposition, her sense of class, her original recipe substitutions, and her ability to exchange or return any merchandise (well, almost any, besides the curio cabinet that still sits in her living room).
Grace is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; an older brother—George Drabek; three sisters—Eunice Drabek, Betty Skrapka, and Louise Brand; and several brothers- and sisters-in law.
Grace is survived by two children (and spouses)—Janie Riggs (and Shea Watts) of LittleRock, AR, and Raymond (and Janice) Skrapka of Norman; four grandchildren (and spouses)— Stacey (and John) Imhoff of Woodbridge, VA, Phillip (and Shara) Riggs of Oklahoma City, Marty (and Kelly) Skrapka of Norman, and Lacy Skrapka of Norman; eight greatgrandchildren— Nathan Riggs, Kylie Boggs, Hydie Boggs, Joseph Imhoff, Avery Riggs, Noah Skrapka, Joel Skrapka, and Eli Skrapka; two great-great-grandchildren—Liam and Raelynn; four sisters—Rose Ann King of Norman, Elsie Ann Harner of Oklahoma City, Janice Harner of Mustang, and Clara Evans of Oklahoma City; one brother—Wesley Drabek of Oklahoma City; several brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
