The Hon. James P. Garrett (retired) died peacefully on October 16, 2015. The world lost one of its most avid OU sports fans, who never missed a game until recently when he could no longer get around. James ("Jim" or "Judge" as he was known to everyone else) was a very generous man, giving to others quietly without any acknowledgement or notice. His hobbies included playing golf when he was younger (but never very well). He also enjoyed occasional fun trips to Las Vegas, where he was very adept at rolling the dice. Jim and his wife, Nedra, loved a good dance party (jitterbug!) and were master bridge players. Friends and family will remember his decades-long annual tradition of making peanut brittle each year around the holidays. He was active his entire life and loved to garden. He was born on January 5, 1922 to Wilkins B. Garrett and Willie M. Latimer Garrett in Mangum, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of three children. He married Nedra Lee Wilson of Mangum, and they had three children – Stephen (Steve), Linda, and Susan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nedra, his son, Steve, his parents, his brother, and his sister. He is survived by his children Linda Garrett Ellason (and spouse Les Ellason), Susan Garrett Christian (and spouse Leon Christian), and Steve Garrett's widow, Linda Garrett. He is also survived by nine grandchildren – Braden Garrett, Lizanne Garrett Reger, Marion Garrett Parke, Honey Regina Christian Valuikas, Paul Christian, Greg Christian, Nedra Ellason Downing, Leslie Ellason, and Crystal Ellason Stinekraus. He had sixteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by a dear friend, LaVeta Martin. He was a graduate of Mangum High School and the OU School of Business. After graduation, he enlisted and served his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was part of the naval forces that invaded Normandy during the infamous D-Day Invasion. When he returned from duty, he graduated from OU Law School with his Juris Doctorate. He was a member and deacon at the First Baptist Church in Mangum and a member of Village Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. He was also an active member of the Oklahoma Toastmasters Club, Rotary International, Kiwanis International, and the BPOE. He was a 32nd degree Mason, 33rd degree Scottish Rite, and a Shriner. He was active in the Democratic Party of Oklahoma and represented the State of Oklahoma at the Democratic National Convention. He was also on the Pardon and Parole Board during the 1960s. His professional career spanned several decades as an Assistant District Attorney in Carter County, Oklahoma; Assistant Attorney General under Mac Q. Williamson; and practicing private law in Mangum. He was also District Attorney in Southwestern Oklahoma. In 1987, he became a judge on the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals until his retirement in December 2001. Services will be Friday, October 23, 10:00am, at St. John's Episcopal Church (5401 N Brookline, Oklahoma City). Close friends and family are welcome to attend the interment in Mangum at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BritVil Community Food Pantry, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, or a charity of your choosing.
