James W.
Goforth, Jr.
Feb 9, 1928 — May 22, 2026
James Wilbur Goforth, Jr. lived a long, full, and generous life, one built on faith, family, and hard work. He passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, in Azle, Texas, at the age of 98. He was born on February 9, 1928, in Anadarko, Oklahoma, to Effie Alcinda Woods and James Wilbur Goforth, Sr. He spent most of his life in Oklahoma City, a place he loved and called home for many decades. James graduated from Central High School in 1946. He entered the U.S. Army in 1950 and served until 1952. While in the service, he married his sweetheart, Judith “Julie” East, on February 27, 1951. Their 54‑year marriage was filled with love, laughter, and devotion. Julie preceded him in death in 2005, and James carried her memory with him every day.
A hardworking and dedicated man, James began his plumbing career in 1947. After returning home from military service, he continued in the trade he loved and later opened James Goforth Plumbing in 1963, which he owned and operated for 50 years. Before entering the plumbing field, he worked as a painter for C. Ray. His work ethic stayed with him throughout his life, and even when he retired at age 85, he joked that he hoped no one would think he was getting lazy.
James found joy in many things throughout his life. Some of his fondest years were being part of Straight Shooters at First Nazarene Church. He was passionate about OU sports, especially football and, in recent years, softball. He loved spending time at the lake and water skiing in earlier years. He cherished reading the Bible, reading the newspaper each day, and ending his evenings with the news and Wheel of Fortune.
Above all, James will be remembered for his strong faith, unwavering devotion to his family, and kindness, qualities that shaped every part of his life and the lives of those who loved him.
James is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Julie, and his siblings Don, Juanita, and Wilma.
His memory will be lovingly cherished by his children: Sharon O’Dell and husband Richard of Azle, Texas; James Dennis Goforth and wife Sheila of Oklahoma City; and Kymberly Raprich and husband Chris of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Tausha Henley, Tamara Irion, Gavin Kula, Courtney Kidwell, Kayla Taylor, Tiffany Parrish, Eric Goforth, and Brett Raprich, along with twelve great‑grandchildren who adored him.
James leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family that will continue to guide those who knew him.
