Obituary

Jimmie Lee Litton, age 89, retired Colonel of the US Army Reserve, passed away on March 31, 2021. Jim was born January 18, 1932, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the only child of Charles A. and Ethel Mae (Barnett) Litton. While growing up in Oklahoma City, he attended Kelham Avenue Baptist Church, Culbertson Elementary and graduated from Northeast High School in 1949. In 1953 Jim graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Business Administra-tion and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. While in college he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity where he served as rush chairman. After graduating, he married Rita McDowell on June 5, 1953. They lived in Oklahoma City and then moved to Fort Sill, where he reported for training before being assigned to Schwabisch Gmund, Germany. During this time they were able to travel to many places throughout Europe. Upon returning stateside Jim was assigned to the 95th Infantry Divi-sion, 4002 Garrison unit, 310th replacement group and 4003rd Garrison unit. When he was promoted to Colonel he was assigned to 95th Division Headquarters again. When Congress approved the activation of the 95th Maneuver Command, Colonel Litton was one of three officers assigned to activate this unit. This unit conducted Battalion test exercises in the fourth Army area. He retired in 1979 after twenty-six years' service to our country. After returning from overseas he and Rita joined St. Luke's United Meth-odist Church and became members of the Wedding Ring Class. Jim served on the church's Administrative Board, Finance Commission, Chairman of the Commission on Missions, and as President of the Wedding Ring Class. Jim was a greeter and usher throughout his life. He loved people, and his smile and friendly greeting is remembered by many St. Luke's members. Jim received his Master Mason Degree in 1954 and is a perpetual member of Amity Lodge #473. Later he became a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and then a Shriner at India Temple in the Greeter Unit, where he served as Director. Jim enjoyed announcing the Shrine portion of the parades in various towns for a number of years. He was one of the leading salesmen for Shrine Circus tickets and Vidalia onions. Jim served as President of the Central States Greeters Association in 1994 and 2007 for the eight-state area. Jim was active in many community activities and organizations includ-ing Downtown Rotary, Sooner Dinner Club (where he served as a director and then as president), Boy Scouts leader, chapter advisor for the Norman Chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha, Sky Line Ministry, and many others. His favorite activity was hosting friends and family at his lake house on Lake Eufaula where he spent countless hours teaching fishing and wa-ter-skiing to family and friends. The lake was definitely his happy place and he especially liked the screened in porch where he watched the boats go by. Jim owned and operated Oklahoma Road Materials for 25 years before working for Miller-Norris Company for 10 years until his retirement. He always felt he had friends instead of customers and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to serve others. He would want to say "thank-you" to all the people with whom he had a chance to work. Jim leaves behind cherished memories with his family, consisting of his special friend Peggy Kirk; son David Litton and wife Leta; daughter Camille Camp and husband Mark; son Mark Litton and wife Debbie.
