JoAnn Doshier Hensley

Was born September 15, 1930, near Calhoun, OK, to Glaston 'Liss' Doshier and Irene Burnell Doshier.

The oldest of four siblings, JoAnn spent her youth helping on the family's small farm outside of Poteau where she grew up surrounded by a large number of first cousins and extended family that she remained close to throughout her life. In 1948, she met JD Hensley when he purchased her pie at the pie church auction, embarking on a relationship that would fill JoAnn's life, and so many others, with fellowship, fun and food - always so much delicious food.

JoAnn and JD were married July 17th,1948 in Tulsa, OK, moving to Houston in the early 1949, where two of their three children - Mona and Tim - were born, before relocating to Oklahoma City in 1953 where the family would later welcome Jill.

It was here, in the south side of Oklahoma City, where the family was rooted and flourished.

JoAnn lived a life of grace. She worked tirelessly with JD to build City Diesel Service in Packingtown, an elegant woman who spent her days surrounded by grease and trucker talk. And always had benevolence in reserve for her children, her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and the larger extended family at Mayridge Baptist Church.

Whether it was a wedding or a wake, a significant anniversary or a softball team's post-game celebration, JoAnn was ready with a deliciously unhealthy smorgasbord of elevated southern cuisine. And desserts. If you spent any time with JoAnn, she would learn your favorite dessert and whenever you crossed paths thereafter, at least one of those pies, cakes or cobblers would be freshly made and ready to devour. She proudly hung clippings from the Oklahoman touting her culinary prowess on the wall of her kitchen.

That fellowship was often accompanied by sports. JoAnn and JD traveled the country in support of the Sooners, bringing extended family and friends with them on countless trips to Owen Field and far beyond to cheer on their beloved football team. They hosted gatherings large and small in their south Oklahoma City kitchen to feed hungry fans before, during and after events. And that passion extended to anywhere a friend, family member or fellow Oklahoman was lacing 'em up.

But throughout her long life, it was family that JoAnn treasured the most. Her vast extended family stretched from Calhoun to Southern California, and JoAnn could spend hours on the phone catching up with cousins, siblings and those close friends who were treated as kin. As JoAnn's children grew to have families of their own, she became chief caregiver, cheerleader and carpooler whenever she had the opportunity, a habit that she would ultimately, gladly extend to her own great-grandchildren.

This week, that large, extended family will gather to celebrate JoAnn's life without the anchor that brought them all together for so many decades.

JoAnn was preceded by JD, her parents and her siblings, Dennis Doshier, Donna Mockus and Pat Rucker. She is survived by children Mona (Robert) Bost, Tim (Vicky) Hensley and Jill (Bobby) Underwood; grandchildren Kevin Bost, Jonathan (Sarah) Bost; Stephen (Renee) Smalley, JJ Hensley (Yihyun Jeong), Katherine (Joe) Robinson; Rae (David) Holland, Selena (Dain) Belyeu, Lea (Andy) Willrath, Nick (Danielle) Brice and Lisa (Ricky) James; 18 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
