Born to Curtis Marion Platt and LaMaytha Agnes Wright on December 17, 1929 in the home of his grandparents, Virgil and Lila Mae Wright of McCloud, Oklahoma. He was raised in Oklahoma City, attending Lee Grade School, Taft Junior High, and graduating from Central High in 1948. In 1952, he received his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma City University in music education, instrumental and vocal public school music. From the University of Oklahoma in 1953 he received his masters degree in vocal music education. During the Korean War, Mr. Platt served in the 437th Army Band, and directed the male chorus at Fort Carson, Colorado. While in the service, he met Shirley Chisman and they were married in 1954. In 1955 he was discharged from the service and they returned to Oklahoma City, where Mr. Platt became the choral director at his alma mater, Central High. John, Jr. was born one month after Mr. Platt joined the Central High staff. During his three years of teaching at Central, the choir won superior ratings at district and state vocal music contests. Mr. Platt's choir was asked to be a demonstration choir for OSU Music Department. In 1957, he took the first integrated high school choir out of the State of Oklahoma on a concert tour to Colorado Springs. The following year, Mr. Platt assumed the choral director's position at Northwest Classen High School. From 1958 through 1978 under Mr. Platt's directorship, the Northwest Classen Cry-Slurs toured outside of Oklahoma every year, performing in Colorado, New York City, California, Florida, Washington D.C., Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Mexico (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Talaxcala, and Tasco), and Graz, Austria. They recorded ten albums; won the vocal music sweepstakes at Central State University for eighteen years straight; sang for the Christmas Tree lightings at Penn Square and Shepherd's Malls; produced numerous TV specials for local stations; and won the International Music Festival at Graz, Austria. Mr. Platt's philosophy was to teach "the whole person." As he reminded them: "You are now becoming what you are going to be." All of his students became part of his family, and he was very proud of each one. He was truly blessed being a teacher. Mr. Platt played American Legion Baseball during his jr. high and sr. high school years and continued his love for ball by playing Sr. softball until he was 75. Mr. Platt is survived by his wife Shirley Jane Chisman Platt, his son, John Curtis Platt, Jr., and his wife, Ricki Sonders Platt; granddaughter, Ashley Platt Thomas and her husband John; grandson, Kyle Austin Platt and his wife Heather; great-grandsons Lakota and Orin, cousins Joe Lyn Platt (Marlene), Jan Rosenbaum, and Tim Wright, and close friends, Nancy Cox, and Kay and Steve Lindley..
