Obituary

Joy Mae Sparks, 77, of Dallas, TX passed away on April 13, 2015. She was born on January 14, 1938 in Oklahoma City, OK to Jack and Sadie Jones, the second of five children. Joy graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1956. In 1960, she married Wylie Sparks and they had three children, the loves of her life. She was very close to her family and talked to her siblings, her children or her mother every day. She spent lots of time with her grandchildren over the years. Joy was a loving daughter, sister, mother, aunt, friend and grandmother. Joy was an excellent seamstress and talented at matching fabrics to patterns. She was a gifted singer. She and her sister Jackie attended the Stamps School of Music in Dallas, TX and participated in their all-night radio broadcast. Together, they performed all around Oklahoma, first as The Jones Sisters and later, as part of the Gospelettes. Joy continued her singing in a church group with longtime friends Bill and Vera Hedrick and Kenneth and LaWanda Bell. Along with her husband, Joy owned two restaurants, Del Rancho in Stillwater, OK and JW and Company in Garland, TX. After those businesses sold, she worked as a Title Clerk for several car dealerships in the Dallas area and finally for the Dallas County Tax Office, where she retired. Joy made friends wherever she went. She was a natural entertainer and would hold court with stories and jokes that kept people laughing hysterically with her quick-witted repertoire. She loved to dance to country music and wear hats bejeweled in bling. She was up to date on politics and current events and was an avid reader. We will all miss her and her sparkling, fun loving personality. Joy is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Sadie Jones of Oklahoma City, OK and by her brother, Kelly Jones of Oklahoma City, OK. She is survived by her daughter Gayle Bakken of Plano, TX; her daughter Julie Randolph and husband Troy of Lubbock, TX; her son Mike Sparks and wife Laura of Plano, TX; her sister Jackie George and husband Mike of Dallas, TX; her sister Faye Wright and husband Larry of Seminole, OK; her brother James Jones and wife Joyce of Oklahoma City, OK; her 7 grandchildren Danielle and Marshall McDowell, Shelby, Dustin and Derrick Leach, Andrew Randolph, and Lacee Sparks; and her great-granddaughter Sophia Grace Zeneli. Visitation will be Friday, April 17 from 4 – 8 p.m. Services will be Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at Vondell Smith Mortuary South, 6934 S. Western, Oklahoma City, OK with burial following at Sunny Lane Cemetary. Condolences may be shared on this page.
