Obituary

Kimberly Kay Barr, 66, of Norman, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2024, after a brief, hard-fought battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Kim was born in Lawton, OK on August 8, 1957, to the late Don and Ima Jo (Howard) Jones. She graduated from Lawton High School in 1975 where she was a talented basketball player. Kim went on to the University of Oklahoma where she played basketball and was a member of Tri-Delta sorority, graduating with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 1979 and a master's degree in administration in 1985. Kim began her teaching career in Moore Public Schools as a PE teacher. In 1990 she moved to Truman Elementary in Norman and remained there until her retirement in 2014. She loved her students and colleagues and continued to substitute and volunteer in the Norman Public Schools for many years following retirement.

Kim met Joe Barr in Norman and they married in 1982. They raised their children, Kelsey and Jonathan, in Norman. Joe passed away in 2016.

Kim was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, attending in both Lawton and Norman. Always a competitive athlete, Kim enjoyed running, rowing and horseback riding. She rowed competitively with the Viper rowing crew in recent years. Kim was a fanatical OU supporter, frequently attending football and women's basketball games, and was always happy to express her hatred for the color orange.

In addition to her parents, Kim was preceded in death by her brother, Chris Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Kelsey Newcomer (John) of Lawrence, KS; son, Jonathan Barr (Lane) of Norman; brother, Brent Jones (Lynn) of Edmond; sister, Stephanie Adair (Larry) of Lawton; sister-in-law, LaDana Jones of Norman; five grandchildren, Ellie, James and Rose Newcomer, and Evelyn and Vivienne Barr; and nieces and nephews, Kristen Hopkins, Braedon Cagle, Alyssa Henley, Chloe Jones and Reece Jones. She is also survived by her horse, Kash, and her faithful companion Prince Hairi the Yorkie.
