Obituary

In Memory of Kwok Yui (Michael) Sheung

Kwok Yui (Michael) Sheung, 78, of Oklahoma City, passed away on June 9, 2024.

Kwok Yui (Michael) Sheung was born on March 19, 1946, in China, the son of Ting Hoi Sheung. He spent his early years in Hong Kong. After completing his education at Lam Yan High School in 1963, he embarked on his first job as a guard in a federal prison at age 19.

In 1960, he met Tak Yau (Mable) in high school when they were 15. They instantly fell in love and were married on November 25, 1967. And they have been married for 57 years and have known each other for 63 years. They wanted to start a new life. Since Mable's sister was already in the US, they decided to apply to move there. Our dad, mom and her family moved to the US in April 1969. Our dad and mom worked in several restaurants and manufacturing plants. They started a family a year later; by 1978, they had three kids.

After years of saving, they opened their restaurant. August Moon Chinese Restaurant was opened in 1976 located in Oklahoma City. It was one of the first Chinese restaurants in OKC. The food was fresh and new. It was featured in the Daily Oklahoman, which was a significant accomplishment. We remember how proud our dad and mom were. As with most Chinese restaurants, when we (us kids) were old enough, we worked alongside them. Even though it was a lot of hard work, it was nice that the whole family was together, including the grandkids, before they retired. Looking back, we have so many cherished memories that are priceless. We learned a lot and are so proud of our dad and mom. They didn't come to this country with much but left an enduring legacy. They retired on March 31, 2011. The restaurant was open for 35 years. Our dad was so giving. He helped people whether they needed food, money or a job. He was a kind-hearted, caring and giving person. He made a difference in people's lives. We still bump into people who talk about our dad and mom and tell us that they miss the food and can't find it anywhere else. Our dad loved meeting new people; he met so many over the years and made many friends. He never met a stranger. It was kind of like family when customers would walk through the restaurant door. He loved chatting with his customers and loved cooking for them. He was always a very positive, happy go lucky person and fun dad. He loved life and his family very much, especially his two granddaughters, Sara and Abigail. They brought him so much joy. He lived long enough to see both of them graduate from high school, Sara graduating from college and Abby getting ready to go to college. They were his pride and joy.

Our dad has always loved cars. His first car was a 1969 Mustang. Over the years, he would purchase cars that he wanted, which gave him joy. He enjoyed life and tried to make every day memorable when he could. Our dad was passionate about trains. He built a board with several scale models, from small to large sets. It was quite cool watching them running at the same time. We remember that growing up, we would listen to our dad playing the harmonica and the piano. After retirement, he and our mom gardened, grew the most delicious Chinese vegetables, and enjoyed the pear tree they had. We set them up with the internet, which was a new experience for them. Our dad and mom loved watching Chinese movies and listening to oldies music on YouTube. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing mahjong, running to the store to pick up groceries to make dinner or just relaxing at home. It was nice to see them settle down and enjoy life after working so hard at the restaurant for 35 years.

When he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, even though he didn't smoke or ever drink alcohol, we expected him to live longer than two months. He was taken from us too early; we wanted more time with him. He did live a great life and was able to do the things he wanted. We all miss him every day and will miss him till we meet him again in heaven.

Kwok Yui (Michael) is survived by his loving wife Tak Yau (Mable) Sheung; Son, Anthony Sheung; Daughters: Wendy Latta and husband Doug; Shi Mai Odvody and husband Trevor and two granddaughters Sara and Abigail. Sister, Lilly Young and husband Paul and Brother Andy Sheung.
