Obituary

Larry "Joe" Henley of Oklahoma City passed away blessed to be surrounded by his friends and family on Friday, May 1, 2009, at the age 60 in Mercy Medical Center.

Joe was born on October 18, 1948 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He graduated from Seminole High School in 1967, attended East Central University, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Central State University. Joe was also a member of the Army Reserve.

Joe was self-employed for 14 years where he is remembered by many for his tireless service. He was a valued employee of Shelter Insurance Companies for 22 years serving as an agent, loss control specialist, and recently serving as a Regional Underwriter. He was the recipient of the prestigious James L. McTurnam Award.

Joe was an avid sports fan and enthusiast with a passion for golf. He began playing at the age of 13. He played on the junior and senior high school golf teams and won countless awards; however, two double eagles and two holes-in one were particularly precious. He was specifically notorious for his "crushing" drives. Joe is remembered by countless individuals for his truly selfless generosity and abounding love of others. He gave of his time and resources to numerous organizations, one of which was the Oklahoma Blood Institute. He had been a devoted donor for more than 30 years.

Joe Is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Deidra McKenzie Henley, their cherished child Jace, beloved niece Christen, and loving pet Buddy Love; brother Michael Henley, and wife Trellys of Santa Rosa, California; brother David Henley of Tecumseh, Oklahoma; sister Cherie Trousdale and husband Bob of Tecumseh, Oklahoma; his uncle Kenneth Goodman and Margie of Prue, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews, Keith, Phil and Chris Henley of California; Damon Henley of Tecumseh; Derek Henley of Seminole; Amanda Oakes of Norman; B. J. Trousdale of Tecumseh; and his Aunt June Looney of Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents Clinton and Loretta Henley,his sister Rebecca Jane Henley, parents-in-law Robert and DeOn McKenzie, sister-in-law Gena Puckett, and nephew Christopher Puckett

A memorial service celebrating the life of Joe Henley will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary, Officiating at the celebration will be Reverend Charles Spencer. The pallbearers include: Larry Stockton, Gary Smith, Richard Vestal, Larry Moyer, Larry DeLacratez, Gordon Pyle, Doug Whitley, and Marty Seikel. The honorary pallbearers are his Shelter family, his 50's golf buddies and his Pi Kappa Alpha brothers. Friends are welcome to visit the funeral home on Monday, May 4. The visitation with family will be from 4:00-6:00 pm.
