Laurence R. Wellons died May 20, 2009, after a long illness. Born April 28th
1926, the middle child of John and Flossie Wellons. He graduated from Hillsborough High School, Tampa FL in 1944 and served with the U.S. Army in WWII. For 42 years he was a dedicated employee of Peninsula Telephone which became GTE and Verizon.
In April 1950 he married Barbara Jo Lewis. They raised four children, David, Diane, Paul and Joseph. He became active in the Boy Scouts Troop 63, leading many boys in fulfilling the Scout oath. Laurence was also among the founding members of the Rough Riders historic association in Tampa. After Barbara's death Laurence transferred to Germany for GTE where he met Claudine Cole. They were married in December 1984 and returned to Oklahoma City where he resided until his death. He soon became Laurence/PaPa to her three girls, Mellissa, Elizabeth and Cherie. He also has thirteen grandchildren that he cherished and adored.
Laurence was an excellent role model for all with his love of family, support of friends and his ever present concern for others above himself. He demonstrated true Christian values in his interactions with everyone.
Until his illness, Laurence loved being on the golf course, spending time at his Florida beach home and working on his many hobbies He enjoyed the company of his many friends, always finding time to regale them with his own brand of corny jokes. Even through the years of his illness, he never lost his sense of humor.
He was a loyal member of The Church of the Savior, where he was very active and served on many committees.
Laurence is survived by his wife Claudine, his four children, three step-children, thirteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, his brother John and sister Betty, two nephews, one niece and many friends. He will be missed by many.
Memorial services will be held on Monday May 25, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., Church of the Savior 5600 NW 63rd St., Oklahoma City, Ok.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be welcome at Church of the Savior Mobile Meals program, which he supported.
