Obituary

Lavern L. Black, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the age of 90.

Services will be 11 am January 21, 2023 at Vondel L. Smith & Sons Mortuary Heritage Burial at South Lakes, 4000 S.W. 119th Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Lavern Leon Black was born on December 9, 1932 to William Frances and Velva Ada (Walker) Black in rural Washita County Oklahoma. Lavern grew up in rural southern Oklahoma where he played High School basketball at Cloud Chief schools.

Lavern Black beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away Saturday January 14, 2023. Lavern Leon Black was born on December 9, 1932 to William Frances and Velva Ada (Walker) Black in rural Washita County Oklahoma. Lavern grew up in rural southern Oklahoma where he played High School basketball at Cloud Chief schools. Realizing farming was not in his makeup, Lavern worked at a series of jobs ranging from propane delivery in southwestern Oklahoma to working at glass plants in St. Louis. Finally deciding to work in the automotive industry. For 40+ years Lavern found a professional home at Fred Jones Lincoln Mercury of Oklahoma City where he excelled in the automotive industry winning multiple awards at local, state and national levels. Lavern loved to square dance, water ski and play guitar. He taught his boys the fundamentals of music using an Epiphone large body guitar his older brother Junior Loyd gave to him. He also taught his boys to ski on Fort Cobb Lake in southwest Oklahoma. He gave back to his community by volunteering as assistant Boy Scout leader while his two boys were growing up and extended his work in the community by becoming a volunteer auxiliary Sheriff of Oklahoma County.

Lavern is survived by his wife of 21 years Laquetta Caton Black of OKC, OK, Laverne L and wife Beverly A Black of Dewey, OK, Michael D. and wife Kathi A Black of Disney, OK, Brenda Gale Caton of OKC, OK, Iona Betche of Weatherford, OK, Lillian Unruh of Enid, OK, Myrtle Dyer of Texas, Joe Hadlock of OKC, Lyndal Hadlock of OKC, Arlon Hadlock of Mustang, OK, Lois Renschen of OKC, Willis Hadlock of Wichita Falls, TX. Along with Seven Grandchildren: Shalina Jo Black of Nevada, Cory James and Jordan Grovenburg of Edmond, OK, April Danielle Black of Bartlesville, OK, Anthony Micheal Black of Dewey, OK, Travis Daniel Black of OKC, OK, Drew Ellis and Elizabeth Black of Enid, OK, Cody Allen and Carly Black of Crescent, OK, and Eight Great Grand children and Three Great Great Grand children.

Lavern was preceded in death by his parents William Frances and Velva Ada (Walker) Black , two Brothers Junior Loyd Black - Loveland Colorado, Eston Francis Black– of the home, three sisters Mary Lois Nicholson – New Mexico, Cathern Black – Carnegie, OK, Rosalee Marie Cowsert – Blanchard, OK.
