LaWanda June Burger was born October 5, 1927 in Ponca City, Oklahoma the daughter of Bud and Ella Barrett. She completed this life on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 in Oklahoma City at the age of 96.
LaWanda lived in Ponca City until the 8th grade when her family moved to Tulsa. LaWanda had a huge crush on the boy next door who was a college freshman. After graduating from Tulsa Central High School, LaWanda married the boy next door, Ken Burger, a union that lasted 53 years.
LaWanda wore many hats in her life as she worked for the phone company, Snap On Tools and as an administrative assistant at the Putnam City Schools for 16 years. The hat she was most proud of was that of wife, mom and grandma. Her sons, Steve and Scott, and their families brought her much joy and pride. LaWanda was a sports fan, mainly football, following her boys and later their boys to many sporting events. Lawanda was a proud homemaker and always kept a perfect yard.
LaWanda was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Ella Barrett; her husband, Ken Burger; and her companion, Don Taggart.
LaWanda is survived by her brothers, Bob Barrett of Dallas, TX and Bill Barrett of Tulsa; her sons, Steve Burger and his wife Jan and scott Burger and his wife, Linda; her grandsons, Brad Burger, Bo Burger and his wife Jennifer, Blake Burger and his wife Emily and Brett Burger and his wife Taylor Beth; her great grandchildren, Keaton Warmoth and Kamdya Burger, Fitz, Jane, George and Louisa Burger, Ellie and Cole Burger; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Allen Haymaker for being her friends and taking care of her for many years. Thank you to the hospice staff and employees of Bellevue Health and Rehabilitation Center for their compassion and care.
