Obituary

Margaret Kimball Brown was born October 13, 1935, in Mishawaka, Indiana, the daughter of Luther Cramer and Ruth Putnam Cramer. She completed this life on April 10, 2024, at her home in Oklahoma City at the age of 88, with her son and daughter-in-law at her side.

Margaret, known as Constance to some, earned a B.A. in English (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Minnesota in 1964. She then earned an M.A. in Anthropology in 1969, followed by a Ph.D., both from Michigan State University.

A trailblazer for women in archeology, Dr. Brown spent a large portion of her career working for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Her involvement included participation at a variety of French Colonial sites, spending extensive time at Fort de Chartres, the Creole House, and Pierre Menard House. She served as the site manager at the Cahokia Mounds Historic site from 1984 to 1999. During her years of anthropology, she wrote several research books, contributed to numerous journals, and shared her expertise in hundreds of historical

presentations,

Margaret was a devout Christian as well as a lifelong Episcopalian. Very active in the Cursillo ministry, she supported many in their personal Cursillista journeys, and was a proud and engaged member of St. Georges Church, Belleville, IL. She did multiple pilgrimage walks on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, as well as writing a fictional book on the topic. She gave generously of her time and resources to those in need, especially an orphanage in Honduras.

She was a proud and loving mother and grandmother who not only exceeded all expectations in her professional life but thrived in her personal life as well. She leaves behind not only her family, but many friends and colleagues who will always love her and have amazing memories of the woman she was.

Dr. Brown is survived by her son Doug Kimball and his wife Brandi, and her grandchildren Rachel and Maxwell Kimball.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 10:30 Saturday, June 1 at St. Georges Church in Belleville, Il, with a reception to follow.

For those who desire, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Little Roses, the orphanage in Honduras that Margaret supported, both in person and financially.
