IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Kathlene
Garland
January 29, 1934 – October 13, 2024
Margaret Kathlene Garland was called home on Sunday, October 13, 2024. She was surrounded by her daughters along with many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Kathy was born on January 29th, 1934, to Evert Edward and Mary Evangeline Wilson in Port Neches, Texas. She grew up with her two younger brothers in their family home built by her father, and spent many hours reading and daydreaming in the large willow tree near their home. She inherited her love for sewing and cooking from her mother and her love of the outdoors and gardening from her father. Kathy graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1952. She went on to study Elementary Education at Lamar College where she met her sweetheart, Eugene Henry Garland. They were engaged a few months later on December 25, 1953, and married on March 27, 1954, in her childhood home. They went on to have 4 children: Mary Elizabeth, James Evert, Judith Ann, and Barbara Jean. Throughout their marriage, they frequently moved to accommodate Gene's employment and church callings. They retired in Canton, Texas where they fulfilled Gene's dream of promoting bluegrass festivals. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Kathy followed the Lord's example by dedicating her life to serving others. She particularly enjoyed her years spent as a temple worker and researching genealogy. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great- grandmother (until you beat her in a game of cards or dominoes).
She is preceded in death by her parents, Evert and Mary, younger brother, Eugene (Buddy), her eternal sweetheart, Gene Garland, Great grandson, William Way, grandparents and many aunts and uncles.
She leaves behind her younger brother, John Wilson and his wife (Elaine) of Cedar Creek, Texas; children, Mary Leach and her husband (Johnny) of Greenbrier, AR, James and his wife (Patty) of Van, TX, Judy Thompson of Mustang, OK, Barbara Weddendorf and her husband (Scott) of Oklahoma City, OK; 15 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.
