IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Virginia
Bishop
April 6, 1923 – September 12, 2015
Margaret Virginia (Orr) Bishop was born in Ardmore, OK on April 6, 1923, to Clarence and Nell (McAlpine) Orr. Five years later, another daughter, Betty Jean, arrived and in 1932, their brother, John Edward was born. Margaret was a quiet, serious young girl. She had a great love for animals, and they loved her, too. From the time she was in elementary school, Margaret knew what she wanted be when she grew up. A nursing career was her dream, and that would come, but not for a while. In the spring of 1941, she graduated from Capitol Hill High School, and she was immediately accepted into the intensive, three-year nursing program at St. Anthony's Hospital. Margaret was very focused on her studies; nurses training was her all-consuming objective, her primary goal in life. But a student in training could not be married, so, in 1943, she put her studies aside to become Mrs. Paul Willoughby. It was war time. In 1945, their daughter, Ann, was born. But destiny took an unexpected turn, and in January of 1946, Margaret became a young widow, living with her parents. Two years later, she married Arvell Carpenter, who had two daughters of his own, and on Christmas day of 1948, the Carpenters welcomed a son, Donn Alexander. In 1962, she was readmitted to the Nursing Program at St. Anthony's; the following year, she completed her requirements, passed the State Examination and became a Registered Nurse. A few years later, the newly-single Margaret began working as Head of the Inhalation Therapy department at Hillcrest Hospital. While at the hospital, she met Dr. Ray Bishop, a radiologist, and in 1976 the two were married. For nearly twenty-five years, they enjoyed numerous trips and cruises together. After her retirement, Margaret made use of her nursing skills and gentle nature volunteering for the care of hospice patients as well as advocating for the sight-impaired. In her last years, Margaret was faithfully attended to by her husband, Dr. Ray Bishop, who never complained and was lovingly committed to her care. Margaret Bishop was pre deceased by her parents; her late husbands, Paul Willoughby and Arvell Carpenter; and her son, Donn Carpenter. She is survived by her husband, Ray Bishop; brother, John Orr; Sister, Betty Talbot; daughter, Ann Mason (John); step-daughters, Sandra Busby (David), Judy Dodson (Gary), Karen Bishop and Chris Nelson; grandchildren, Kelly Blount (Ben) and Andee Smyer (Joel); and her much loved great-grandchildren.
