The Obituary of Michael J. Whelan
Born in Albert Lea, Minnesota on May 16, 1934 and died at home in Oklahoma City on April 1, 2011. His was an adventurous life well lived. From his banking career beginning as a National Bank Examiner to spending the last 27 years of further education and work as a Jungian Therapist. His passions always were rooted in helping others gain their emotional and financial freedom. He loved traveling abroad, reading, and following and discussing politics, he was Irish in everyway. Most of all he enjoyed his family. Mike was always interested in discussing problems or events of the day over a great dinner.
He is survived by his best friend and wife, Rachel Witten Whelan and his only sibling,, Sister Ellen Whelan, sister-in-law Carol Teague, nine children and eighteen grandchildren.
Mike's pride in his family requires that each child and grandchild be named: Kevin, Michael, Timothy, Molly, Sean and Dan Whelan, Kim, Cindy and Janna Witten. His eighteen "brilliant and talented" grandchildren are Bennett Michael, Bridget, Madeline, Josie, Tim, Jr., Addie, Colleen, Patsa. and one month old Mathew Michael Whelan. Jacob, Joey, Emily, David, Elliot, Hilary, Andrew, Ethan and Jillian.
With Mike, friendships and family required his loyalty and unconditional positive regard. The hole in our hearts that his transition leaves is huge and will never be filled.
Memorial Services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday April 6, 2011 at Vondel Smith Mortuary North Colonial Chapel. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am on Wednesday before the service.
