IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Oscar Carl
Curnutt
August 19, 1933 – June 12, 2014
Oscar Carl Curnutt was born August 19th, 1933, in Talihina, Oklahoma to Ed and Nissie Curnutt. He passed away June 12th, 2014 at 9:03 p.m. in Oklahoma City with his family gathered around his bed.
Oscar grew up in Talihina, Oklahoma where he graduated from high school in 1952. After graduation, he began working for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. His work at ODOT was interrupted by a tour of duty in Korea for the U.S. Army.
After returning to ODOT, he started on a survey crew in the early days of highway expansion in the state of Oklahoma and moved his way up to the Assistant Division Engineer of the Survey Division. After retiring from ODOT in 1988, Oscar worked for Universal Field Services and then Smith-Roberts Land Services as a utility engineer and right of way agent. He attended Oklahoma City University, the OSU Technical Institute, and was a member of several associations and advisory boards related to his professional field.
On March 21, 1958, Oscar married Joyce Dragoo in Oklahoma City. They spent much of their married life in Edmond, Oklahoma, raising their two girls. After their daughters were married, Oscar and Joyce lived on an acreage east of Oklahoma City and spent some of their most joy-filled years restoring a small farm outside of Luther, Oklahoma. They moved back to the south side of OKC in 2007 to be closer to family.
Oscar's life included a broad range of public service. Prominent positions included his service as a Trustee at Midwest Christian College, Chairman of the Board at Mimosa Heights Christian Church, and President of the Oklahoma Society of Land Surveyors. Lesser known positions were his years serving as a Boy Scout Leader, directing construction projects at Camp Sooner (a Christian summer camp), and providing construction assistance or cabinet making to numerous organizations.
Oscar was a master woodworker whose creations graced the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues. He loved telling stories from his childhood and reading, especially Louis L'Amour novels or books on the history of the West. One of his family's favorite memories is of Oscar sitting in front of the fireplace, reading a book or telling stories.
He was a long-time member of Mimosa Heights Christian Church and then transferred membership to Shartel Church of God after moving to the south side of OKC.
Oscar is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Joyce; his daughters Liz (married to Kevin Gunter) and Kathy (married to Dusty Rubeck); his grandchildren Anna (Gunter) Fullington, Levi Gunter, Whitney (Rubeck) Wallace, and TJ Rubeck; his brother Jim of Florida, along with many nieces and nephews.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Frank, Edgar, Mary, and Margaret (Curnutt) Pagel; and his half-sisters Theo Billings, Edna Folsom, and Bessie Rouqeou.
