Obituary

Roger William Zody of Oklahoma City, OK, passed away on February 19, 2021. A father, grandfather, great-grandfather and Air Force veteran, Roger will be remembered for his service to his country, his good humor and devotion to his family and community. Roger was born on February 18, 1947 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana to William Aaron Zody and Ione Lottie (Gulick) Zody. He grew up in Indianapolis graduating from Arlington High School in 1965 and Butler University where he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1969. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity; he worked as a houseboy for both Alpha Chi sorority and his Sigma Nu house and worked parttime at the Butler library. Roger participated in the ROTC program and in June, 1969 he was commissioned into the US Air Force and embarked on a 21-year career as a military officer. His Air Force career began in September, 1969 at Keesler Air Force Base immediately after Hurricane Camille. He completed Electronic Systems Officer training then was assigned as a Maintenance Officer in the Strategic Air Command at radar bomb scoring sites in Bayshore, Michigan; McLean, Texas; and Sidney, Montana and in Vietnam. Roger then served as a Maintenance Officer in the Alaska Air Command for NORAD. He continued his Maintenance Officer work at both George, AFB in Victorville, California and Luke AFB in Phoenix, AZ. In 1979 Roger was transferred to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City. He finally got his wish to fly… E-3 AWACS airplanes. Beginning as an Air Surveillance Officer then as a Mission Crew Commander and finally as an Instructor; Roger flew over 3400 hours in the E-3 with an additional 2100 hours as an Instructor. Roger was Chief of Training, Assistant Director of Operations, and Deputy Commander of the 966th Squadron. In 1985 he was sent to Osan AB, Korea for a year to be Director of Operations for the Master Control and Reporting Center. He returned to Tinker AFB to become Chief of Airborne Systems and Requirements. He will be remembered most by his E-3 comrades for the "Zody point" which is no longer used in the newest modification of the airplane. Roger retired from the Air Force as a Major on January 1, 1991. After retirement Roger worked as a consultant for several companies: Training System and Quality Control Research, Hughes Training Inc. (Ratheon Technical Services), L-3 Communications, Link Simulation and Training, Booz Allen Engineering Services (formerly ARINC Engineering Services), and Omni2Max. In May 1969, Roger married Patty Willetts in Indianapolis, IN. Together they raised four children: Suzanne Michelle, Sheri Marie, Sarah Melissa, and Scott Matthew. He loved when the kids or grandkids would come to visit, played in a ball game, or going camping in the RV. He enjoyed his "breakfast club" friends and the AEWA meals. Roger loved the opportunity to usher at the Civic Center Music Hall with Patty and to be able to watch the wonderful shows there. Roger was preceded in death by his father William Aaron Zody and his mother Ione Lottie Zody. He is survived by his wife, Patty, and his four children Suzanne Zody and Sheri Zody of Oklahoma City, Sarah Zody of Thorton, Colorado and Scott Zody and his wife Lindsay of Yukon, Oklahoma; also surviving is his sister Rosalyn and brother-in-law Bob Gentry of New Palestine, Indiana.
