Obituary

After a rich and purposeful life, Ruby Mae Fent Dixson died peacefully on Wednesday, November 6th, 2024, at the age of 101. She was born to Leslie and Martha (Mattie) Fent on June 19th, 1923, in Sparks, Oklahoma. She met the love of her life, Orrell Gilbert (Happy) Dixson, at a diner where she was a waitress. Happy would come in with his buddies several times a week. One day he wasn't with the group, and she asked his friend Larry, "Where is that good-looking friend of yours?" Of course, the young man repeated this, and Happy followed up.

The couple became inseparable and were married on December 23rd, 1951. They made their home in Oklahoma City, where they worked and raised three children, Howard, Mark, and Deanna. Happy ran a bakery/pastry route and attended Draughon Business School, where he studied a business curriculum, and was able to type 75 words a minute. He accepted employment in an office for a short time but found that sitting behind a desk was not for him. He followed his family trade, painting and roofing for the rest of his life. In the 50's, Ruby worked at the Oklahoma Inspection Bureau. In the 60's, she was raising a family while working at Brown's Department Store. In 1968, she began working at TG&Y where she stayed for 12 years. Happy succumbed to heart disease and diabetes in June of 1970. Through love and perseverance, Ruby found a way to raise three children on her salary, always being sure that everyone had basketball shoes, birthday gifts, and whatever they needed. Later in life, she worked for Nutritional Food Center for 18 years until retirement.

With a mixture of laughter and grace, Ruby guided her growing family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her nieces and nephews described her best qualities as being nonjudgemental and always ready for fun. She loved to be on the go. If you traveled, shopped at the Mall, or even went to the grocery store, she was always a willing companion. Even after multiple health issues, she never wanted to just sit. Her mornings were always spent cleaning and organizing the family laundry. When she folded laundry, she would insist that everyone put it away instead of leaving it in a basket! Her favorite activity, though, was baking delicious desserts. In her later years, she baked for every family member's birthday. She would call and ask about their favorite dessert, prepare it, and deliver whatever they had requested. Her special ministry, however, was buying lap throws, flowers, and cards for family members or friends who were ill or needed a lift to their day. Several family members recalled that they always looked forward to her weekly phone calls, where she shared the latest events and had positive observations about life in general. Her faith never wavered, even in the most difficult of times. She was a member of Grace Assembly of God and Southpointe Church from 1957 till her death, faithfully attending as many services as possible.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Martha (Mattie) Fent; siblings, Ernest Fent, Alvin Fent, Floyd Fent, Laura Dobbs, Leroy Fent, Mozelle Wilson, and Arthur Fent. She is survived by two sons, Howard Dixson and wife Joanie; Mark Dixson and wife Martha; one daughter, Deanna Bremerman and husband Todd; five grandchildren, Sean Dixson and Joely Smith, Drew Dixson and wife Alyson; Christina Sowah and husband Charles; Ty Bremerman and wife Courtney; Haley Bremerman and Brandon Arnold; nine great-grandchildren, Hailynn Dixson, Ruby Jane Dixson, Carinne Sowah, Chloe Sowah, Tatum Bremerman, Maddox Bremerman, Emery Bremerman, Adalynn Bremerman , and baby Lila Dixson (expected to arrive in January 2025.)
