At the age of 94, with her three sons at her side, Ruth Bonita Freeman, peacefully passed on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the home of her oldest son, Charles L. Stokes Jr. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Bonita, as she was known, was born June 6, 1926 in Mutual, Oklahoma to parents Clarence Tallman and Pearl Ruth (Hopper) Griffith and 2 year old sister Marjorie Marie Griffith. Soon after her birth the family moved to Oklahoma City where she grew up. Her early childhood happened during the Great Depression that started in 1929. During World War II she worked at Tinker Field as a timekeeper. In December of 1944 she married Charles L. Stokes. They had two children, Anita Louise and Charles L. Stokes Jr. who came to be called 'Buddy' which later shortened to Bud. Her husband, Charles Sr. died in an auto accident November 1947 leaving Bonita widowed with two small children to raise on her own. She later met and married home builder, Andrew Nathan Freeman, in September 1951. To this union were born: Patrick Jay, C. A., Rebekah Christene, and Stephen Lester. Bonita was a long time member of the Church of the Firstborn having been baptized in August of 1951 shortly before her marriage to Andrew. Bonita and Andrew made their home in Oklahoma City until moving to Wayne, Oklahoma in 1960 where they lived until 1977. During her time at Wayne, she was primarily a homemaker and tended to the family farm along with cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, a single white horse, and 4 boys. In the mid 70's she worked at J&B Clothing Store and later at Sherri Classics, a clothing manufacturer, in Purcell, OK. Her love for sewing resulted in the gifting of many, beautiful homemade quilts for her family. From Wayne, Bonita and Andrew moved to Welling, Oklahoma where she continued to live after his passing in 1991, until April 2014, when due to an injury, she relocated to live with her son Bud until the last grains of sand emptied from her life's clock. Bonita Freeman was preceded in death by her daughters Rebekah and Anita, her father and mother Clarence and Pearl Griffith, sister Marjorie Shepherd, husband Andrew, son Stephen and daughters-in-law Deanna and Marilyn Stokes. Bonita was a fiercely devoted mother and a seemingly tireless worker when caring for her family. She had an immense fondness for infants and small children and her face would light up if she encountered a baby…any baby! She possessed a keen sense of humor, loved to laugh, and had a quick wit and if the occasion demanded, a stern glare and sharp tongue. It is strongly suspected, had Bonita been in King Solomon's court as one of the two mothers contending over a surviving infant and Solomon decreeing the child to be cut in half, that she would have tangled with the king himself! She is survived by her Sons: Charles L. (Bud) Stokes, Patrick Freeman and wife Shelly, C. A. Freeman and wife Judina, 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and a host of other family, Brethren and loved ones. For those that knew and loved her, she will be sorely missed. We would like to acknowledge and extend our heartfelt appreciation for the unselfish and loving acts of care, support and service toward our Mother by the Sisters and others who, in various ways, shared in the experience of her much needed care.
