Obituary

Sheryl Jean Jones August 26, 1952 – April 8, 2021 Sheryl "Sherry" Jean Jones was born August 26, 1952 in Mineral Wells, Texas, the daughter of Freddy Gene and Charlotte Irene (Webb) Jones. She passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2021 in Oklahoma City at the age of 68, following a brief illness. Sherry was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Sharon Kay Jones O'Roke, nieces Erin Lindsay O'Roke and Kelly Louise O'Roke, and grandniece Zion. Sherry was born with Phenylketonuria (PKU), a then-unknown metabolic disorder that left her with profound intellectual disabilities. Sherry lived at home with her parents until the age of 9. In 1961, she was accepted to the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center in Pauls Valley, which was able to provide her with needed round-the-clock care. After SORC's closure, Sherry moved back to Oklahoma City where she lived with her two housemates and was cared for by a team of professionals from Central State Community Services. Although Sherry didn't say a lot, she had a big personality and strong opinions that she never hesitated to express. She loved getting dressed up, flipping through Sears catalogs, controlling the television remote, getting her nose "stolen," and visiting with her family. She disliked the wind and any social occasion where she was not the center of attention. Sherry also delighted in toys that she could make play songs or stories (or any sound, for that matter). Her favorite was her stuffed dog Violet, perhaps because she sang Sherry's favorite song: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Sherry lived a good life, and she taught all of us a lot in the process. She will be missed, but her family takes comfort knowing that she is now reunited with her parents, who loved her so. The family extends their gratitude to Sherry's care team at OKDHS, her caregivers at the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center in Pauls Valley, and the team from CSCSO who provided Sherry with care after SORC's closure. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at the Resurrection Cemetery Chapel, 7801 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dale Rogers Training Center, 2501 N. Utah, Oklahoma City, OK 73107. www.drtc.org
