Obituary

Shirley J. Shelton, of Oklahoma City, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the age of 96. Our Mother was born in Oklahoma City on November 15, 1928, to Joe and Jewel (Foster) Bowman. She was raised in south Oklahoma City. Mom graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1946. Mom married the love of her life, William "Bill" Shelton, on June 18, 1948. She worked for Capitol Hill High School early in their marriage. When Dad's career took them to Houston with Gates Rubber Company, Mom began working for Houston Public Schools administration. In the early 1950's, our parents transferred back to Tulsa, Oklahoma with Gates Rubber Company. They were active members of Harvard Avenue Baptist Church and developed close life-long friendships. In 1963, the family moved to Oklahoma City and Dad started working with our grandfather, Joe Bowman, at Bowman-Shelton Orthopedic Service. When Mom returned to the workforce in 1972, she assumed office and administration duties at the company, and she and Dad were able to balance their work and family lives together, which brought them great joy.

Our parents were blessed with 3 children, Jo Anne, Willie, and Kirby. Mom unconditionally loved all her family dearly and she always made sure we knew just how much she cared for all of us. Our family attended Capitol Hill Baptist Church from 1963 to 1970 and again made life-long friends there. In 1970, our family joined First Baptist Church of Moore, and it continues to be our church home. Mom was active in her Sunday School class, the church Prayer Ministry and the senior adult choir. She loved to serve the Lord and her church family throughout her life was always near and dear to her heart. Around 1970, Dad and Mom purchased a small log cabin on Pine Bluff on the Illinois River where they had vacationed when living in Tulsa in the 1950's. As the family grew, a second story was added to accommodate. There are many great memories of generations of family and friends there in the woods of northeastern Oklahoma. Mom enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends, taking care of her flower beds, and going to garage and estate sales. She also was an avid reader. She loved music, especially gospel music and hymns and she had a beautiful voice while often singing them. Most of all, Mom loved spending time with her family and making special memories with her grandchildren. Throughout the years, Mom was like a mother to so many. She had a servant's heart and was a wonderful Christian role model to her family members and friends. Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched.
