Dr. Sudhir Kumar Gupta was born on November 17th 1955 in Delhi, India to Shri Prakash Chand Gupta and Shrimati Dayawati Gupta, the youngest of eight children and the only sibling in his family to study medicine.
He graduated from Maulana Azad Medical College in 1977. Two years later, he immigrated to America with his wife, Shikha Gupta, whom he adored, to complete his residency and then a fellowship in cardiology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. In 1981, their first child, Prerna was born.
After finishing his fellowship, Sudhir knew he wanted to start his own practice, so the family moved to Oklahoma in 1986, where he became the first cardiologist within a 40-mile radius of their hometown, Shawnee.
One year later, he launched Shawnee Heart Center and their second child, Esha, was born, followed by their third child, Rijul, in 1992.
Sudhir was a beloved member of the Shawnee community, caring for patients and saving lives for 38 years. He served as the Chief of Staff at St. Anthony's Hospital and was one of the founders and a passionate board member of the Avedis Foundation, an organization devoted to fixing health inequities within the community. Through his foundation work, Sudhir helped shepherd many projects that have transformed the health outcomes of residents in the greater Shawnee area.
As a physician and community member, he will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to always putting the welfare of his patients over his own; he proved that a gentle man can be a powerful one when it comes to making a difference in the lives of others.
As a father and friend, he will be remembered for his smile which was always bright with joy, his fun and adventurous spirit, his boundless curiosity – he loved to learn and teach – his kindness and generosity, and his devotion to his wife and children, whom he cherished.
For all that knew him, he will be remembered for his integrity – he was a man of his word and cared deeply about doing what he felt was right – his legendary kulfi recipe, his avid love for golf and reading, the joy he felt when spending time with his family and the pleasure he felt when eating his favorite dessert: apple pie with vanilla ice cream.
Sudhir is survived by his family who will miss him deeply – his wife, Shikha Gupta, his elder daughter, Prerna Gupta (husband: Parag Chordia), his younger daughter, Esha Gupta, his son, Rijul Gupta (wife: Hannah Fornero), his grandchildren, Shiv and Laksha Taal and his large extended family throughout India and the U.S.
We love you, Sudhir.
