IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sylvia Ann
Armstrong-Avery
July 18, 1934 – May 7, 2024
Sylvia was born on July 18, 1934 to Charlie and Irma Wilson in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She passed peacefully from this life on May 7, 2024 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She longed to go meet Jesus and receive her reward. Sylvia was the second of five children and loved her childhood years. Sylvia was a proud graduate of Capitol Hill High School, Class of 1952. She was active in various clubs, but her favorite was singing in the choir. Shortly after graduation, she met the love of her life, Clifford Armstrong. They married on December 15, 1952. They moved to El Paso, Texas, where Clifford was stationed at Fort Bliss. Their son, Neal Ray, was born at the US Army Hospital in 1953 and Anita Kaye followed in 1954, only 11 months and 3 days apart. In 1955, the Armstrong family returned to Oklahoma City where Clifford made his career as an auto mechanic and Sylvia settled into her role as a dedicated homemaker and Mama. Their son, Tony Lee, was born in Oklahoma City in 1963. Clifford's hobby and passion became drag racing. After church on Sundays, the family would always head to the fairgrounds for the races. Sylvia would pop open the trunk of her car and start making racetrack steaks, better known as bologna sandwiches. Sylvia always had a line for lunch. For the rest of her days, Sylvia was known for having an open door if you were hungry. With three kids, Clifford gave up racing in 1965 so he could better support his wife and children. There is no such thing as a cheap hobby! Sylvia continued in her role as helper and bookkeeper for Clifford's business and added to it as an active mom in the PTA, bible class teacher, chief cook and bottle-washer, as well as a willing volunteer wherever there was a place that needed her. In 1972, Sylvia was instrumental in starting Living Word Academy, a private Christian school. Sylvia and so many others raised countless dollars and pitched in where there was a need. She loved her role at the school and impacted so many young lives with her innate kindness. Sylvia also took on the role of working with young married women at the church. She took such delight in teaching them skills and what it meant to be a Christian wife and mother. She could talk for hours about her memories from during this time of her life. In 1985, Sylvia and Clifford took in their two grandchildren to help raise them. They were five and two years old and Sylvia never complained about this added responsibility. Sylvia and Clifford bought a house at Lake Texoma and loved going down there to spend time with friends from church. You could sometimes find 20 people there in a very small two bedroom cabin. On Sunday mornings, they would attend a small church in Mead, Oklahoma. It was a highlight of weekend. They also enjoyed dinners out and playing dominoes and card games with their friends. Clifford passed away in 1987 and Sylvia rose to the task of raising the grandkids alone. In 1989, Sylvia met and married Floyd Avery, packing up her home and the kids to live for the next 25 years in Keota, Oklahoma. From being a city girl to being dropped off in the middle of the country, once again, Sylvia rose to the occasion and made a great life for the kids and Floyd. Sylvia became very active in the small community and made lots of friends there. Floyd passed away in 2015 and Sylvia returned to Oklahoma City shortly thereafter. Sylvia was happy living here in Oklahoma City and being back in the city. While not as active as she once was, Sylvia still loved getting out for hair and nail appointments, eating out and of course, going to church. Sylvia was a lifelong member of the church of Christ. She loved and excelled at accapella singing. Hardly a day would go by, that Sylvia was not singing, especially loving to sing the old hymns she treasured. Next to singing, Sylvia loved to sew and she was very skilled and could make anything. Sylvia sewed Clifford's leisure suits and ultra-suede coats. Sylvia also made all three kids their clothes and sewed for others as well. Sylvia loved to cook and have people over to enjoy. Sylvia always welcomed people to her home and was also so gracious. She was a beautiful person inside and out. Until the last few months, you would never be able to catch Sylvia with a hair out of place or dressed to the nines. Sylvia had such beautiful skin with hardly a wrinkle. Her children and grandchildren would always say "We hit the Mom jackpot!" While her absence leaves a hole that will never be filled, we know she is rejoicing in Heaven with Jesus and all those loved ones who preceded her there. Sylvia has heart the words "well done good and faithful servant." And how can we be sad for her?
