Obituary

A memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the South Colonial Chapel. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Vernon Bernard Kinslow, Jr. 79, passed away February 9, 2024 following a short and courageous battle with cancer. Vernon was born to Vernon Kinslow and Juanita Mary (Wilson) Kinslow in Pauls Valley, OK.

Vernon was also known as Vern, & Dude (from his grandmother's childhood nickname of Doodle Bug) by family & old friends. He went to school in Paoli, Wynnewood, & Pauls Valley, OK where he graduated from high school in 1963. Following a year at East Central College in Ada, OK, Vern joined the U.S. Army. After basic training, he spent the remainder of his tour with the ASA (Army Security Agency) in Berlin, Germany until his Honorable discharge in 1969. While in Berlin he met & married his first wife, Maren Rosenplanter. In 1969 they came to Stillwater OK. During this time their first daughter,Tamara was born. They later moved to Moore, OK where their second daughter, Kortni was born.

After moving to Moore, Vernon was soon hired by the Mosler Safe Company. During his 30 years with Mosler, he set up & maintained bank security systems, and repaired & maintained bank safes & safety deposit boxes. While at Mosler he also set up the security system for the Cowboy Hall of Fame as well as J.C. Penny at Penn Square during construction. After Mosler closed its doors, Vernon was immediately hired by ADT Security where he won several awards for excellent employment & workmanship for his next ten years until his retirement 14 years ago.

Vernon was an avid reader and enjoyed mysteries, science fiction, westerns & historical nonfiction. He had a brilliant mind and was knowledgeable in most aspects of history. Vern had a great interest in military artillery, guns & airplanes especially of the WWII era. Vernon was a great cook, enjoyed tinkering with everything, especially electronics, being on the computer & helping people. He would help family, friends & even strangers. Following the 1999 Moore tornado he aided many neighbors even after his own home was destroyed. This led to his great desire to help First Responders at the Murrah Building bombing site. He worked all day & would volunteer tirelessly at night. Vernon was also known for his sense of humor & laugh. He loved a funny joke & enjoyed telling them.

Vern & Maren were married 33 years until her passing. In 2005 Vernon met Jan Smith Martin. They were married in 2006 & happily married until his death.

Vernon is preceded in death by his first wife Maren Kinslow, father Vernon Kinslow, mother Juanita Zellner, stepfather Floyde Zellner, sister Linda Jones.

Vern is survived by his wife Jan Kinslow, daughter Tamara & husband Tony Miller, daughter Kortni & husband Trevor Torralba, stepdaughter Jana & husband Justin Hathaway, grandson Dylan Miller, granddaughter Lauren Miller, grandsons Setde & Tedan Torralba, step grandson Odin Hathaway, step granddaughter Taylor & husband Brady Brock & great grandson Anakin Brock. Vernon is also survived by his sister Peggy & husband Frank Burris, brother Paul & wife Sherry Zellner, sister Karen Chatham, sister Jennie Kinslow, & sister Barbara Madison and brothers-in-law, Eric Smith and wife, Vicki, and Cort Smith and wife, Leigh.

Vernon will be honored in a Memorial Service at Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary, 6934 S. Western Ave, OKC on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.at the South Colonial Chapel of Vondel Smith Mortuary.

Donations can be made in Vernon's honor to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
