Obituary

Vurl ("O.B.") Dixson met his Savior face-to-face on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024, in the house he built with his brothers and father to hear the words, "WELL DONE MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT!", just a few days short of his 69th wedding anniversary. After deciding not to continue his basketball scholarship at OCU, Vurl was recruited by the St Louis Cardinals; but baseball was not what he (or his knees) wanted in life so instead, he joined the Air Force. Following his service, he met his soon-to-be wife at (oddly enough) a basketball game at his high school Alma Mater, Dale High School.

After 5 years of marriage, Vurl became a father in 1960, and then again in 1963, and once more in 1968. During those early years he, along with his brothers and father, built houses across the metro-plex. He was a master craftsman at work, at home, and for everyone else who called. But his greatest work was done across roughly 40 disaster recovery and relief missions in locations from tornado-torn Oklahoma, to the flooded hills of Kentucky, and from earthquake-ridden California, to starving villages in third-world countries.

Through those trips Vurl remained a vigilant father and husband and still served churches he and his family belonged to (including a 1-year unpaid leave from his "real" job). While we kids (at least then) thought him to be a disciplinarian, as we've grown older and experienced our own parenting challenges as everyone does, his words ring true in our ears, "You will know what I mean when you have kids of your own."

He has not just left servant-hearted footprints-in-the-sand for us to follow just as Jesus did, but has helped to preserve, and better lives and futures, across the world.
