Obituary

William Edward “Bill” Howard, age 94, passed away October 10, 2026 in Oklahoma City. Bill was the son of Judge Alexander Travis Howard and Cecile Morrissette Howard of Mobile, Alabama. He attended Southwestern at Memphis before serving in the US Army during the Korean War. During his service he graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning Georgia. After his service, he graduated from Auburn University where he received a BS degree in 1956.

Bill married Melba L. Hammonds in 1957 after being transferred to Tulsa, Oklahoma with United States Steel. He later transferred to Oklahoma City with US Steel before going to Enid and retiring from Singer Steel in 1997. He was a passionate supporter of the YMCA and Veteran programs. While enjoying racquetball, golfing and swimming, his main love was heading south to the Gulf and Mobile to fish while visiting family and friends. He carried his fishing pole in his car and would be known to stop at local ponds while driving “to drop a line.” Bill loved to also spend time and spoil his furry friends, Boo, Burrito, and Spanky. He was a long-time member of United Methodist Church of the Servant.

Bill was also a devoted loving husband and father. He truly lived by “the Golden Rule.” His patience, kindness, sense of humor and understanding nature will remain in our hearts.

Bill is survived by his wife Melba Howard of Oklahoma City; children, Alexis Howard of Oklahoma City and Marshall Howard of Fort Myers Beach, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parent, his brothers, Dr. Percy Howard, Rev. Crawford Howard, Judge Alexander T. Howard, Jr. and his sisters, Cecile Howard Gardner and Marshall Howard Heart.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of the Cross in Church of the Servant, 14343 N. MacArthur Blvd. Oklahoma City, OK on Monday, October 26, 2026 at 11:00 AM. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to your local YMCA, Wounded Warriors Program or ASPCA.
